PORT Melbourne has held off a tough and rugged South Adelaide by 22 points at the MCG on Saturday to move through to the semi-finals of the Foxtel Cup.

Shaking off a strong challenge from the Panthers, the premier side in the VFL won 12.6 (78) to 8.8 (56).

WAFL side Claremont, one of the favourites to take out this year’s title, awaits the Borough in the next round.

Sam Dwyer (26 disposals and two goals) and Toby Pinwill (25) were both prolific for Port Melbourne, sparking their team through the midfield with an unrelenting attack on the footy.

Adrian Bonaddio (two goals) was also important, using his strength to out-position opponents.

For South Adelaide, forward Peter Rolfe (four goals) was a constant threat and his finishing skills around goal were a key feature.

Rolfe's goal tally included two terrific goals where he used his strength to break through a couple of tackles and had enough composure to finish.

Port Melbourne held a slim 11-point lead at three-quarter time, unable to establish its dominance early.

But the Borough's experience and poise under pressure came to fore in the final term, as they closed out the game with little fuss.

Hugh Sandilands and Dwyer put the contest out of the reach of the Panthers with back-to-back goals.

Tom Langford, who kicked a remarkable goal tucked up on the boundary in the final minute, sealed the Borough's victory.

PORT MELBOURNE 1.4 4.5 8.6 12.6 (78)
SOUTH ADELAIDE 1.2 4.5 6.7 8.8 (56)

I was disappointed South couldn't get up as I was holding out hope of being able to watch them live over here in Perth in the semi-finals. It's a shame 'cos I reckon they'd beat Claremont.
Still, one can't really fault their effort in this comp against two powerhouse VFL sides at the 'G'.

Hard luck South.

Is that their first ever loss at the MCG?

I've never rated South on or off the field during my lifespan BUT I want to congratulate them for having a serious crack at the Foxtel Cup.

This club is finally getting its act together in recent years and I think the Foxtel Cup wont harm their 2012 season one bit.

You must be taking the piss. No way can anyone think they had a serious crack when they left their best players out! Also can't believe the words "tough" and "rugged" have been used to describe a South Adelaide side. Yet more ammunition to those (myself included) who think this competition is a waste of time in it's current guise. Can't wait for the 2013 edition to see how SANFL sides justify joining when those involved this year have voted against by resting their best players.

they fielded are stronger side then any other SANFL side has in the comp.

If Ainger had of played, with a target up forward the result may well have been different.

You have to be on crack to say one can't really fault their effort, ffs they didn't bother to even put their best possible team on the park! Why bother in the first place heh? So that's all 3 SANFL teams that pulled up short in this "Rox Off" Cup, what a HUGE exercise in self flagellation  Some clubs need to grow a pair of plums!

I can think of 4 other clubs that need to do this before anyone can slag off South.

Gary Ayers said during the telescast that they rested 7-8 of their 'best players' - perhaps someone could confirm.
On TV Port Melbourne looked a big side, almost AFL size, and much bigger than all the current SANFL sides - any South fans who saw it live is that a fair assessment - thanks

reading the preview Ayres was resting some of his best players, just as he did for the game in Darwin.

Captain John Baird certainly didn't play for the Boroughs.

They did rest some others as they had at least 7 reps in the VFL side that pounded Tasmania last months, and thus had not had a week off so far this season.

Think both teams rested 4 first choice players.

It was a massive effort to get that close to a team that has lost 2 games in the past 18 months considering Port Melbourne thumped the Panthers round 1 Foxtel Cup opponent Williamstown the week before they scraped home at the MCG.
