They surely can't have pleaded guilty if they'd known he'd be deregistered. No matter what your thoughts are on Craig Parry, 16 wks suspension in my view doesn't merit a lifetime ban. Why on earth is it 16 in the SANFL if it's 32 in the AFL?

"Harsh penalty" - that's the whole idea.
"One of your better players, and maybe best ruckman in the league" - irrelevant.
This sniper has had plenty of chances.

just saw the "incident" on ABC news break. Even with a record if you get two weeks and career suspension for that. God help the game. No wonder it never takes off overseas. I give up

Parry is a slow learning thug.
The rule seems ok in principle but fails this test.
In summary, the rule is worse than Parry is.
The suggestion of a rolling drop off of games makes a lot of sense. Perhaps it should be 16 games over last 5 years or similar.

Poor Craig Parry. To go down in the history books as the first player to be deregistered in the SANFL. Is it fitting? It was a typical Parry act in the heat of battle against a midget. In the old days there would have been a square up, and play on in the context of the game.
Sorry Craig but the past is the past. How do you "contact" Matty Cambell in the head during that "play" without it being deliberate? We were there. We saw it from 20 meters. 20 meters is not that far.

The rule itself is a reasonable idea. We don't want guys who can't control themselves on a footy field, whether it's local, country or league footy. But the fact they brought this rule in and applied games before the rule existed is unfair IMHO. The day they brought it in some blokes found themselves deregistered instantly. It's also very unfair to make it a one size fits all rule. A bloke plays 20 games and gets 16 in suspensions has a problem. A bloke plays 600 and gets 16 in total is a bloke who does something minor every now and then. There definitely needs to be something in place to account for longevity and also games from before the rule existed shouldn't apply. The tribunals of the day had the ability to set massive penalties for serious offenses if they deserved such.

If Parry has not been advised of being close to reaching deregistration, he 'can not' be deregistered. This is written in the rules and I'm lead to believe after reading them afl players 'can not' be deregistered, but their games suspension halved.

Half forward flank, northern end , " Glass Taj Mahal " forecourt. Clear as day from boundary side. Just beside the channel 2 camerman. Surrounded by Eagles diehards. Thanks for coming.

no surprise the only ones defending Parry are Eagles supporters- and yes the rule was brought in to deal with serial offenders.
Parry didn't "accidently" get 16 games...

Ever been to Prospect? I didn't think so. Crowd was dismal. Eagle fans dont travel. Craig still is guilty whether you were there or not.

Good win by "your " team. Good luck in the finals. Without Parry.

It was their league director who said plead guilty, as its in the best interests of football.

100% right. Retrospective rule changes are for dumb lawyers who don't know how to draft a transitional clause, and unprincipled politicians looking for some cheap electoral advantage.

Part of Article 15 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: "Nor shall a heavier penalty be imposed than the one that was applicable at the time when the criminal offence was committed." Whacking people on the park isn't (charged as) a criminal offence, sure, but the principle is there, and the 5 weeks that he got for striking 10 years ago in 2003, is now being counted towards giving him a much heavier penalty, under rule changes made in 2011/12. That is retrospective punishment.

Spot on here. The Jack Oatey Medallist will be getting off the lifetime ban.

Bet they wish they didnt rush through the vote last thursday now.
Just think of the concessions they could have got if they played hardball and made the Crows sweat for another week.

Don't tell me you are the north adelaide supporter commentating every play (for the first three quarters anyway) standing on the Taj balcony. Worth the price of admission!!
