Neither why waste an article in The Advertiser on the SANFL.
He'll talk about how things are falling apart down at West Lakes because someone cut the grass the wrong way and how Neil Craig' shirts are a size too big. You know... .the important stuff.](*,)

The media had him polling exceedingly well.

It's not just umpires and media that can't agree, Luke Ivens has just won "The Roost Player Of The Year " award for the 2nd year running, yet he only polled in 1 game, last year he didn't poll too many either, and wasn't up there in the media awards either. Different people look for different things.

Well, I've been up all night and still no luck. I've redone the votes on the computer in the Lounge Room but I can't use SnagIt on this one. :(

That is ridiculous!
I'm going to do a full analysis as well and find out what other dodgy decisions the umpires made :)

This was an extraordinary one. I called this one for Pine Lodge with John Nankivell and there was absolutely no doubt in our minds he was BOG BEFORE looking at possessions. Simon Feast, for that matter, was exceptional also on the day. There were some quite strange ones during the night. Justin McConnell had a blinder in round 1 v Nwd but not noticed. There were a few during the night that had some of us on the media tables really scratching our heads.

Well done to Mouse though - a great result and very well deserved! He will be on the GF Show also this weekend, so don't miss the interview!

Backwell joins lost list of greats

MICHELANGELO RUCCI, CHIEF FOOTBALL WRITER

October 06, 2006 12:15am
Article from: The Advertiser

GLENELG midfielder Brett Backwell admitted he was in shock as the SANFL's highest individual honour was draped across his small shoulders last night.

And so- the latest entry to the exclusive Magarey Medal club can be excused for forgetting, from his long list of gratitude, to publicly thank the four men who finally removed the bridesmaid tag from his name.

That is, Glenelg's player advocate to the SANFL tribunal and the three-man judiciary that saved 26-year-old Backwell from joining another Glenelg player, Stephen Kernahan, in being the highest votegetter in a Magarey Medal count but not the winner.

Backwell last night had the Magarey Medal won when he polled the best-on-ground three votes against North Adelaide in Round 20. He did not poll votes in the next three rounds - and no-one narrowed the gap.

In the league's last home-and-away series, Round 23, Backwell did not need votes to ensure he became the first Glenelg player to win the Magarey Medal since rover Tony McGuinness in 1982.

But Backwell needed to preserve the other stipulation former SANFL president William Magarey demanded of the award winner - fairness. Backwell was reported in Round 23 for allegedly charging South Adelaide's Josh Thewlis.

It was that Kernahan story - way back in 1983 when North Adelaide rover Tony Antrobus won the Magarey - unfolding all over again. But Backwell's report was dismissed, ending a story of four times - including in the VFL's JJ Liston Medal - being a runner-up.

"If it happens," answered Backwell of dealing with the anticipation of being a medallist, "it happens." And now it has happened.

The medal favourite - last year's winner from the Port Adelaide Magpies, Jeremy Clayton - polled just eight votes. The umpires, last year appreciating his brilliance, last night did not hide their annoyance at his backchat.

Same at Elizabeth where Central District twins James and Chris Gowans polled just nine votes - five to Chris and four to James. The message was very clear about the Magarey Medal emphasising fairness this season.

And Woodville-West Torrens midfielder Justin Cicolella is a Magarey runner-up for the third time. He still has a chance to get an equally cherished medal for this season - a premiership medal - on Sunday.

What a crap way of writing an article on the Magarey Medal. Shows no respect for the SANFL or Backwell himself by taking a slant on the tribunal. There is not even any mention of how Backwell plays the game. And what the hell does the title mean?

Congrats Brett Backwell. A deserving winner of the Magarey Medal and came across very well on tv. A fine example of the dedication shown by many players in the SANFL who travel away from home to play in this great league.

Hmmm.... thinking outside the square, wonder whether the SANFL had prior knowledge of his unassailable lead, & were not comfortable with a scenario, whereby a player wins the Magarey by daylight, yet is inelligible because of suspension...
