Interesting point Diss, personally I think there is a difference between coaches and players. A lot of prep goes in prior to a game and the game plan is being taught by the coach for the entire season (to enable the team to cope best when they lose a vital player, such as Colville). In essence, the coach doesn't 'play' regardless of whether he turns up or not.

So he might as well not turn up then?
And still get a medal?

I guess my point is - the players, coach - everyone puts in through the year to make the Grand Final win possible.
The captain more so than most other players.

Yet the coach can get the medal and the captain can't (if they both weren't there).


I would have thought it's just as "unfortunate" for the coach (and fortunate for the assistant coach) as it is for the captain....

No need to apologise, I do it all the time at work and it gives most people here the shits, so I probably have it coming!

The players play the game, kick the goals, tackle the opponents etc. The coach selects the players, tells them how to play and instructs. In my experience coaching, 95% of impact is over time and 5% is impact of a coach on game day. With a player, the opposite applies.

That question is too hard Diss, and I'll probably contradict myself.

Being a bit off-colour wouldn't stop a coach from rocking up - he could be 80% and still coach well, unlike a player at 80%. But if a coach is "ill" enough to not coach, then it is probably a very serious illness, life-threatening maybe, so would still give him one. And then there are probably a number of cases in between ie food-poisoning.

Feel sorry for Gav that this is becoming an issue because he has been through the emotional wringer the last few days.

Must admit I didn't have a huge issue to begin with but when I found out McIntosh only got one by mistake and was hunted down by the SANFL afterwards that I think it does reek of a double standard. Given the President's background probably not the wisest move the SANFL has made if they want to avoid conflict of interest calls from the public.

It seems clear that the consensus is Premiership medals for the 21 & Coach & Premiership Squad medals for others (criteria to be established.)
Interestingly, if I recall correctly, Gavin played under an injury cloud in the 2000 GF & spent most of the match on the pine..he would have been selfish & foolish to put himself in that position again.
The medal in its current format is recognised as reward for the winning GF players & coach- for the SANFL to make it up as they go along puts us in the Mickey Mouse category.

How about they re-name the medals "Grand Final Medals"...that seems to be a more fitting meaning as they are awarded for winning a Grand Final game only.

p.s. FWIW I was awarded a premiership medal after being dropped for a winning GF once and do not even consider it when looking back on my other winning GFs that I actually played in, no matter how much I contributed throughout that year.

The reactions from the players , coach , staff and supporters after the final siren and back at Woodville Oval vindicates this.

4 times club champion and captain of the club.

We could not have a more courageous and outstanding leader if we scoured the earth ( over the top , but thats how i feel)

If anyone at the club deserved a medal it would be Gavin with Ronnie a nose in second place.

We know what Gavin is made of and thats why he is our Leader and will always be until he hangs up his boots.

However the medal represents those that took the field that day , plus the coach.

The honour board will show that he was the premiership captain

Agree with all but one of those points. Colville was the captain of the club but not premiership captain. You have to be a premiership player to be premiership captain and unfortunately for Colville he's neither. The club can recognise him however they choose (and he does deserve recognition as a fine player, leader etc) but if the honour board recognises him as Premiership captain then it is factually incorrect IMO.

I thought the moment he did his shoulder in the preliminary final that it was a blessing for the Eagles simply because hes a player with mental scares and he could be replaced with a young lad free to have a crack! While there is no doubt Colville is a great player i have doubt's on weather he is a great leader, seems too nice a bloke and seems to lack that bit of shi* that makes a captain! At the end of the day as Scotty Lee says "Just because they give you a medal your not about to pop in the 2006 GF video next time you put it on".

A mate of mine was telling me last night that Robbie West received a medal despite not playing in the GF for Port in the mid 90's (perhaps 96) ... I couldn't recall it, anyone know if it's true/false?

Now you mention it CP that does spring to mind.he copped a broken jaw,not sure from who,but IIRC he also got a medal,but if memory serves me,I think that was from the club and not the SANFL.Could be wrong,there has to be a first time..
