Who would have thought?

Was a very good performance by the Double Blues and for a minor round match was the best performance by the club for some time. Port really gained the ascendancy in the third quarter after we led narrowly at half time and it looked a case of Port by how far but we managed to play like that in the last quarter to snatch the win.
We certainly made the most of our opportunities in front of goal.
Was hard for me to pick best players in a good overall team performance but I thought Nelson, Sheedy, Chambers, Crane and Evans were very good and for Port I thought Biasci seemed to be everywhere and there were good games from the Claytons, Summerton and Dolling.
The downside of the day was seeing Bratton get stretchered off after being given a poor 'set up' handball from a team mate and i'm not sure how he is (may have already been mentioned here).
Scott Thompson and Brent Reilly were interested observers at the city end of the ground.

Not happy with the Port boys display for the last 20 minutes, but, very impressed with the Double Blues efforts throughout the whole day. From the first bounce Sturt were switched on and the Pies had to play from behind for the first quarter.Second quarter evened the ledger a little, and I thought the third displayed who would run out winners.

Chambers led Achee a merry dance all day,all day mind you, with out a change?

Kicking into a breeze in the last 1/4 and with an 8 point lead we had 13 blokes starting behind the ball, conceeding the centre bounce and sitting in the back half waiting for the ball to come down. When it did come screaming down,Deluca gave a 10foot tall target (like the look of the big bloke,Power listed) and Chambers did the finishing.

Few questions of Ginever this week, not for him,of him.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Certainly think that he'll be a better player than what he's given credit for and that he has more going for him than what Giles does but I'm sure the Central supporters won't agree with me on that one.

I disagree. With the exception of a few dodgy ones I thought they had a fairly good day by going largely un-noticed. Mind you, after seeing Glenelg play West and Sturt it wouldn;t be hard to improve on those games in the maggot department.

Sturt were impressive. I think they were up to 5 goals down late in the game and to come back and win, at Alberton, made this Glenelg supporter tres jealous. The old guard (Sheedy, Weatherald, Nelson) were v good and Chambers is in red hot form. Evans, Deluca and Bratton (before he was poleaxed) were also very good when it counted. Summerton uses the ball well and Clive, Le Cras and Miller will cause plenty of headaches up front. Clayton, J looks an angry little man atm. Expect him to get close attention down at the Bay.

Some locals didn't take too kindly to the loss and it looked like it was about to kick-off with the Sturt Cheersquad as I was leaving. Anything develop? I hope not.

Only the really biased ones ORDB - Giles has 2 league games to his name and plenty to do before he can be credited with anything other than potential.

Well done to Rick - he has already given more hope than most thought possible this early in the season. Proving the dogs game plan (with his own touch of course) is quality, so long as it is adhered to.

Matt, that's a constant concern of mine, that too many frees are paid. Chambers got one in the last I think it was where he just fell over - subsequently the ball rolled through for a goal. Waterhouse got one where he pretended to be held onto, and in the last right in front of us the Sturt guy was either holding the ball or play on - not pushed in the back. We got the free to us. Those frees were simply not there. There most probably were many others which don't particularly spring to mind at the moment.

Sturt dominated the centre in the last quarter but I wouldnt describe it as Port conceeding. In the heat of battle Port simply had no answer to the Sturt ruck set-up.

I think that Port just shut down 5-10 mins into the last. They stopped running and began chipping it around. By the type of game they were playing it was clear that they thought they had it won. A combination probably of tiredness and arrogance, it was a pleasure to watch it unfold. If there's one thing that the Sturt team are this year it is FIT.

We have just become the best team in the comp. Good luck to any other team trying to beat port at alberton this season. Sturt are the greatest. :butthead:
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

Yeah well, when you can't afford to have a Christmas then you appreciate it a little more. :P

Port v Sturt

Postby sturtpeter » Tue Apr 24, 2007 1:42 pm

Am really stoked with the win. Most importantly the TOTAL focus must be on winning at our hallowed home on Saturday.

We haven't beaten the Redlegs since 2004 at Unley

This should be a quality game with us keen to maintain our unbeaten run and Norwood, the great Club they are playing for pride and respect.

Go Blues! :)
