ANZAC DAY Eagles vs Central

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Aerie wrote:Okay ... the worst thing about today is that Central are back. They looked superb. We played pretty well in the first half, helped by us being accurate and the Dogs being inaccurate - but we still had patches where we were tough at the ball and pushed the Dogs really hard. Central were able to do it longer though and the 80 odd point margin was probably reflective of the difference between the two sides at the moment. Central won't play any worse than that in the big games, so at least we know what is required if we are even to be around the mark.

Firstly to the Dogs - the Gowans (I find it hard to tell which is which) but they both looked free of injury and moved really well today. They really turned it on when the game was on the line during the end of the 2nd quarter and during the 3rd. Callinan is sensational. As an Eagles supporter I'm not real impressed he's ben picked up by Central because he could be a Magarey chance - as if they're not strong enough even without him...

The Eagles were disappointing. Lindsay was best for us IMO. When he was in ruck during the 2nd and 3rd quarters we got the ball out of the middle and would get back in touch, but as soon as he went off Central would get it out of the middle and score the goals.

Other players who were good in patches - Cooper, Cica, McKenzie, Powell, Fiacchi, Salter.

We have quite a few players who are not up to league standard and while you can usually hide 1 or 2 in a good team - when you have 5 or 6 it really tells.

I watched the last quarter of the reserves and despite going down by 10 points, they looked to play good footy. Hier looked good in the last quarter so hopefully he comes straight back in.

The next game at Richmond becomes a MUST win.

And we have 5 or 6 players who are out injured (or didn't play seniors) to replace them - Symmons, Lomas, Inkster, Colville, Hall and Hier, so that's why I didn't think we would be a show today.

Great win by the Dogs today. I expected it to be much closer, but a fantastic win.

This was my first trip to Thebby since I was a toddler (too young to remember), and after hearing all the horror stories, was expecting the worst. Ok, it's not the best ground in the league, and Woodville is definately better, but it's still not too bad a ground, and is in better shape than grounds like Norwood. The lights were useless though (the time clock gave more light), and what was with only having half of them on? Fantastic atmosphere at the ground as well.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

Centrals had 5 or 6 players out and it didnt effect them. It just shows which team has the greater depth.

Couldn't get to listen to the game today because of kick off time and at work. sounds like the Eagles got a real mauling. The Dogs have put in two teriffic performances so far this season winning by big margins against the top two finishers of last years minor rounds. Of the rest in the league yet to play CD, perhaps only PAM (sorry Sturt) seem to have the ammo to topple the Dogs.

Yes I know it's only R3 and I am sure we haven't seen the best of the Roosters yet but IMHO it is looking a bit omminous.

Hi Twosheds, funny you metion Phils Law. Thats what I was thinking at the end of the first quarter - that once our average improved and their approached the human we would be well in front. On the ABC they showed a close-up of the lights - only half of them were working - I'm sure there's a line there but I will avoid it.

Hey Twosheds, when is young twosheds pulling on a guernsey?

Not this year, after that who can tell, Stanley is very close to pulling up anchor and sailing.

Eagles are a long way off the mark at the moment. Got killed for pace, esp around goals, with likes of Callinan and Slattery. Probably the one thing about our injuries/missing players are they are the ones with a bit of pace - Colville, Inkster, and Symmons and Lomas who both played in the twos.

Looking at the reserves, some good young kids there, but we seem to have lost a lot of our back-up depth that could step straight into league footy, such as Coles, Spencer and Angus.

Interesting that over the last few years, one side or the other has looked as though they were on the downhill slide after Anzac Day, but came back to make an impact in the finals.

Centrals have obviously recruited very well.

Regardin the Slattery's - were there four at West, and now just one, with the others going to Centrals, Port, and Essendon?

Surely you arent considering Hall as a 1st 21 player are you! His days are numbered, good luck to the guy if he wants to keep playing but he cant be in your A grade. Im starting to think Colville's in the same boat!

Everyone can play that line. We'll throw in O'Sullivan, Graham, Westhoff(susp), Aufderheide and if I wanted to really grasp at straws- Steinberner.
