Ex-footballer avoids jail over drug find

http://abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/08/30/2019696.htm?section=justin

A former footballer who became addicted to methamphetamines has narrowly avoided being sent to prison after admitting to possessing the drug for sale.

Matthew John McRae, 31, was given a suspended five-year prison term by Judge Gordon Barrett in the Port Augusta District Court in South Australia.

Police found him slumped over the wheel of his car last October.

A search revealed he had two bags of pure methylamphetamine.

Judge Barrett said McRae was an exceptional all-round sportsman in his younger days, but had become addicted to amphetamines while living in Adelaide, where he played football for the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL.

Suspending the sentence, the judge said it was not too late for McRae to get his life back on track.

He wouldn't be the only one.

For the record, how many he play?

At least he didn't use the Andrew Johns defence...

Your first point is spot on, a community of blokes who earn good coin from footy is going to have plenty of drugs and booze floating around.

And your last point - LMAO, how often do people put tablets in your pocket? And then he forgot it? Sure...

Hopefully McRae gets his life together.

The name didn't ring any bells for him playing for Port, and if he did, it would have only been Reserves probably.

Wouldn't you have to be on drugs to want to play for Port Adelaide??

Agree with Bayman's sympathies though. Would love anyone addicted to drugs to be able to kick the habit and get their life back on track.

Yes it is great when it happens, but unfortunately in my experience most just want to get more drugs.

One of the problems is going back to mixing with the old "friends" who encourage them to join in their "normal social activity" again. It is a bit like giving up smoking, or gambling, most of the peer group encourage relapsing because they feel bad if some one makes the break and they can't or won't.

I've never heard of the guy (as a Port supporter who follows all the names of the players who play), more than likely the club pi**ed him off because he was a druggie dropkick, so yeah does show Port wont put up with tossers like this so you're right.
