Can anyone explain...

Postby Punk Rooster » Mon Feb 06, 2006 11:07 am

why Doug "Journalistic Hack" Robertson, was given an all expenses paid trip to Darwin, so he could write 1 paragraph on a game of football, involving a local SANFL club & a (state) representitive side? The coverage by the print media, is disgraceful. ABC (who covered the game) gave it decent airplay on the Sports section of the news, as did C9. Congratulations to these outlets for being on the ball. I will now limit my newspaper buying to Fridays & Sundays, in footy season only- let's face it, I get more info of off the net.

Why blame Doug Robertson? He's been fighting for ages to get more SANFL coverage. Write to the sports editor.

We're lucky that Robertson gets our current coverage printed.

Fair point, my angry e-mail will now be aimed at Michaelangelo "Journalistic Hack" Rucci!

The NT News carried a fair write up of the game.

Quite easily explained;
1. It's the 1st week in February (Like the middle of the cricket season)
2. It was only a trial game
3. Contrary to what some posters on this forum imagine, the football world does not revolve around North Adelaide.

Valid points (except the last one  ), nut if that's case, why do we here about the Crows shopping expiditions? Who cares if an AFL player has decided to stop wearing boxers, and now prefers Y-fronts? My point is, with all the crap that was in the Sunday Snail, maybe there was room for a 1/2 page from an actual football game? Who wants to hear that the Sarge has turned from Villain to Hero? Most Footy-starevd followers may have been interested, in what God's own footy team was up to on the weekend. It was big news in the NT, why not news here?

Fair point Punky. You should have seen the big spread (about 6 or 8 pages) in Fridays NT News plus live interviews with the Jarmans on ABC radio plus live coverage of the match -you mate Robinson from the Advertiser was interviewed prior to the match.

It was great (and something different) to see the sports pages in NT covering the game so much. Even today there was a write up. I would love to see coverage like that for the SANFL in Adelaide!

No wonder he didn't write anything after you barrelled him up after a dozen beers.
Wasn't the Crows v Port v Media boat race more important?
For every one I miss I am closer to a hole in one.

Sad truth is that SANFL football is now looked on the same as how the lower grades were treated prior to the AFL - Only read SANFL and very little local (Marion etc) - I support R&B comments reference Doug Robbo, he fights a good battle but the odds (media management gods) do not support him.

They were the only SANFL side playing on the weekend, and if any other SANFL club was playing I would also like to see them get a good write up as well.

I'm sure Doug Robertson put a lot more "pen to paper" (of fingers to key board) than went to print.
He can only write it, he doesn't get the final say on what is printed. I hope he brought a few copies of the NT News back with him to show the coverage the SANFL should be getting.

True- it revolves around the doggies. I couldn't work out how to drop them into the conversation but you've helped me do that now. Thanks.

If anyone is sick of North being in the Advertiser then they should perhaps give their own club a kick up the arse and get their club to spend more time promoting the game.
Talk to any journo about the work North do behind the scenes in regard to promotion, no other club comes close.
Christ, the money North spent on promoting the SANFL by going to the NT alone would be more than a alot of other clubs put together will spend for the entire year.
That doesn't even take into account live scoreboards, photographers, etc that they fork out for that other clubs don't.

Its no wonder media coverage is going backwards here with the effort some put in.

People shouldn't be chastising the Advertiser or North for their coverage, they should be praising them and getting their own club to aspire to the same level thus helping North to build the SANFL back up in the media world! I'm amazed at some people's negativity, get positive if you want the SANFL to progress.
