Have been away the last few weeks, and have not seen any of the prelim finals or grand finals.

But talking to someone who was at both games, (a nuetral observer) his thoughts at the end of the prelim was that some of the North players looked like that they had achieved their dreams, and that they didn't look overly bothered when they were smashed in the grand final?

Fair call or completely wrong?


On the same track, where the North fans gutted to get so near and yet so far, or where they content with a solid year?

I dont understand why people jump on players/coaches/fans that celebrate after winning a prelim final, especially when for most its the first time they've qualified to make the decider, and it was a come-from-behind victory.
So if your team wins a match by 1 point, any match, dont you celebrate? How did the bays players/fans/coaches feel after knocking off Sturt in the elimination final? I'm sure they just walked off the field, no hugs, no pats on bums, no clapping to the crowd etc etc.

Pretty sure the Geelong players celebrated after the final siren when they beat Collingwood in their prelim, and look what happened the following week.

To me it sounds like sour grapes to those fans of teams that didnt make the GF.

Interestingly, Alan Stewart once revealed that when he saw the replay of the final in 95 prelim win that put the dogs in their first GF, he was disappointed in his own reaction. Not even a smile.

He said if you can't enjoy that, you should get out of the game for a while.

A bit of the topic but would North Adelaide be interested in trying to nab Jason Torney away from South. He would be the perfect player to replace Howard (even better IMHO), hard at it style midfielder, half back flanker.

Plus there is the connection between Torney and Ben Hart, Andrew Jarman and Darren Jarman. I personally think his career has been success starved and this may be his last chance to play in any kind of premiership. We all know the problems South have had in recent years so as loyal to the panthers as he maybe a move to a more successful club maybe very attractive at this stage of his career.

Maybe best to post this in the thread about player movements. But just a quick response, if Torney wants success he should only go to Central.

To me it sounds like he was just asking the question because was away.

Looking back at the 85-86 GF losses its the 86 one that gutted North supporters and the Coach as he spoke about at the 87 Premiership reunion dinner.

I'd guess Centrals fans felt worse after 96 than they did after 95?

Maybe the 1st one back after a long gap brings with it a 'happy just to make it' feeling v the other team who sees anything less than the flag as a failure.

Who knows? Probably it was simply a case of the Doggies way too good on the day I am sure any player would be properly motivated to do well in a GF. North had 3 come from behind wins in 4 games to make the GF so they may have run out of legs too.

Wasn't really a solid year. 2006 we won 16 games this year we won 12. Made the GF this year but our real chance to win one was 2006. This year everyone was playing for second place and as such i can understand why we were celebrating winning the prelim.

Realistically the side with the best chance of challenging Central in the GF was Glenelg IMHO. I am glad we didn't have to come up against them in the finals. Having said that Glenelg still wouldn't have beaten the Dogs.

To me it sounds like he was just asking the question because was away.

In that case its a silly question to ask.

Who (players/coaches/fans) would be happy about losing a grand final?? Yeah sure you can reflect later and say yeah, the team made progress, but straight after the event, I doubt the North crew were happy or not too fussed.
What I'm saying is whats wrong with celebrating and being happy straight after you earn a GF spot?

I wouldn't say mission accomplished by any means. Only a premiership does that. But considering at half time of the last game we were looking at an Elimination final, and then finished the season second after beating last years premiers twice in the finals, I for one finished the season a lot happier than I could have.

I have a feeling that a lot of North supporters would have set a target of 'no less than a GF' this year. Having achieved that, I think they can be partially satisfied. If they were to make it again next year, then I think 'just making it' will not be good enough. The old adage of 'you have to play in one before you win one' rings fairly true.

EG Centrals 95/96 to 2000
Sturt 98 to 02
Eagles 00 to 06

Great point there Blues!

Good to see that Sturt are now a powerhouse.
I do agree with you though, Blues, that it can take a few years to go from the 'making' to 'winning'. Apart from Central and the Eagles, most sides have suffered a setback the year after making a GF.

to true... as much as it hurt to lose... (and it did) i was happy to finally be there... but then again im just 21 so wen we won in 91 i was 5 sao i wanted one i could remember... but meh it will come im sure...
