SANFL Recruiting Rating as of 4/1/08

At a post of Topsys I thought it was probably time to see how we rate club's recruitment for 08 so far.

Centrals
2 ins but replacing 3 or 4 regular league players
C

Eagles
10 ins and only 4 outs announced but the 4 outs were very good league players.
Looking at names only at this stage you'd say only 2 or 3 regular league players out of the recruits they've announced.
C-

Glenelg

4 ins and 4 outs but the 4 ins look a better class than the players lost.
A-

North

Only 4 ins and 7 outs and all 7 played league footy in 07, most pretty regularly too. Gone for quality over quantity but look a ruckman and a forward short.
C

Norwood
8 ins and 10 outs. Look to have 5 or 6 that will jump straight into league footy losing 5 or 6 that played league footy.
Class of the ins looks better than those leaving though. McGuiness a huge out though not to mention Bailey's ball getting ability.
B

Port

1 quality in (Picket) with a lot out who were regular/good league footy players.
D+

South
Torney's a great in, one of the best recruits one would think but about 5 really good outs.
D

Sturt
3 really good Ins replacing 1 or 2 good outs. Forward line look great.
B

West
Crikey, where do I start? The merry go round of the SANFL but only losing 3 or 4 consistent players and possibly gaining 7, 8 or more league players.
A

Just remember that some clubs have a lot more salary cap to work with than others and some clubs have a lot more gaps to fill as they have less depth than others and obviously there will be more recruits announced (you would think) but IMHO the recruiting table as of 4/1/07 looks this way;

West
Glenelg
Norwood
Sturt
North
Central
Eagles
Port
South

Don't abuse me, just a starting point for a discussion. :D

I think South also picked up Travis Baird from an AFL club, WB i think, so presumably he will be quality.

My side, Port will struggle this year if they dont pick up 1 or 2 key forwards before the start of the season.

West's has been good but they really needed to pick up some quality players given their lacklustre squad last year.

Overly positive there, Wedgie. Of the 4 ins, one was playing with the Bays half the time anyway (Hinge), and another (Bode) wasn't exactly a recruit to the club. Hard to say if the newcomers are a cut above the players who have left, but they have some pretty big shoes to fill: Ben Moore was nothing if not classy, David Mitchell was the biggest kick in the league, Josh Mahoney was exemplary when playing for the Bays, and Jeff Smith was (to my mind) the most improved player in 2007.

Eagles recruiting has always been pretty poor but given that have lost quality players this year with only 1 recruit of league standard (wright) it is not good enough. I don't think the lists of ins are correct (more like 3 or 4 b-graders from other clubs and that's it) or outs (lomas and hier).
Fuller said on 5AA that they are filling the gaps internally so appears no plans to recruit any further.

North have recruited the best and would have to be a big chance of a premiership this year.

Agree with that Pseudo. ATM I'd say Glenelg are even with what has left the club. Ironically we lost a former VFL (Full Forward) rep in Mitchell and gained Grima (a HF VFL rep). Moore and Bode would be a straight swap, although Moorey bought something to the club that can't be replaced, which hopefully Bodey can fulfil. Smithy is a huge loss, and that is one of the blokes we need to get covered. McCormack, haven't seen him, but Glenelgs strength lies in it's midfield and run, so if he can bring something to the table then good work. Indert the * where applicable...

Where has Zac Hier gone? has he gone home (to Riverton) or stayed in town.

I'm not sure where Zac Hier has gone just heard the story from someone down at the club that he wasn't keen on the training schedule.

Thanks for maggie for pointing out I put this in the wrong thread.

We'll have to agree to disagree Bays fans, mind you I only went on what I saw and you guys saw a lot more than I did, I'll reluctantly downgrade it to a B+ for yas though.
(I also think someone training with the club is more likely to do better than a fill in from AFL sides)

Matthew Bode >>> Ben Moore
John Hinge >> Jeff Smith
Damien McCormack => Josh Mahoney
Todd Grima > David Mitchell

(4 plusses in my book although comparing different positions and of course it relies upon Bodey being fit)

Wedgie I understand where you're coming from re training with the Bays instead of the Crows (for Hingey especially) but Hingey played just about every game last year as did Smithy, yet you have them side by side. At this stage Smithy hasn't been replaced, adn he was close to 200 cm and could pinch hit ruck, play key position up fron and down back. Those sort of blokes are hard to replace. Grima may go some ways but if he does then we'd then be missing a Mitchy type.
Still need some one to replace Smithy IMO.

Yeah, I agree with that comment, I think Grima will more than make up for Smith BIG TIME.
Even if you're down on one of those match ups I made you're up on 3 hence the rating.

I think similar to North you've recruited quality and not quantity BUT you had a lot less very important players to replace than North. Considering you were a better side than North in the 2nd half of the season you do the maths as to where I think the Bays MAY end up.

And the best recruit of all the clubs goes to West - Andy Collins. He's worth 1.5 grades on his own IMHO.

He has a bit part to do with it but I also think their CEO who has a lot of contacts in Victoria also has a lot to do with it. West supporters certainly have some brighter times to look towards, the whole place looks very professional now. (Even the BBQ)

A few points. There's still some handy INS coming for Norwood and I still don't think many of Norwood's OUTS will really hurt us other than McGuiness. Losing Aussie and Pfeiff will hurt as well but I think we've more than covered them already. IMHO there's at least four of our INS who'll play most league games, injuries permitting, and if we can get some quality time out of the remaining players we'll have done really well.

Personally if you're going to count Pfeiffer as an OUT I'd like to see Walker as an IN, he'll play a bit for Norwood and is more than handy from all accounts.

For the sake of consistencey (and my lack of knowledge on the young AFL players) I left the mini drafted players out, but yes I do acknowledge with the abnormal reliance that Norwood has on AFL players compared to most clubs that there will be a big plus there.
If I up it to an A- will you be less grumpy? :?

Tom Looby is a quality in for the Pies. More than a handy player when he was with us 12 months ago, and I think Lobbe will be more than handy too. Eichner is virtually a in for us too, we still need a tall forward, hopefully Clive isn't too far away.
