Number one ticket holder at the bay

Postby Rushby Hinds » Wed Mar 01, 2006 2:52 pm

MEDIA RELEASE
Wednesday 1st March 2006
Kernahan Number 1 at the Bay
The Glenelg Football Club is striving to significantly increase its membership
in 2006 and leading the charge is former great and Hall of Fame Member
Stephen Kernahan. Kernahan has accepted the offer by the Club to be the
number one ticket holder and is committed to helping the Club maximize its
membership and get as many bay supporters back to the Club.
He knows the advantage for the players when the bay oval is packed with
parochial Tigers Fans. Kernahan played 136 games for Glenelg between
1981 and 1985 before being lured to Carlton where he became the longest
serving captain of the Carlton Football Club. He was a major part of the most
successful era of the Glenelg’s history and was best on ground in the 1985
premiership win. The Glenelg Football Club has always been home to
Kernahan who attended Brighton High School and developed into one of the
all time great players in Australia.
While living in Melbourne and still involved with the Carlton Football Club,
Stephen has put his hand up to help the Club get back to being a powerhouse
of the competition. Much like in the early 80’s the Club is blessed with a
group of talented juniors from the local area and its south east zone. This
talent includes 3 Brighton High School talents in Bryce Gibbs, James Sellar
and Mark Austin who are set to make their mark. The players are committed
to working together and becoming a close knit group and under the guidance
of new coach Mark Mickan Tiger fans can look forward to some successful
years ahead. Kernahan knows the importance of a tight knit group. With
close mates such as McDermott, McGuinness, Symonds, Duthy, Salisbury,
Hall and many more all pulling in the same direction the Club developed into
the most fierce outfit in the competition. There is no reason why the current
group can’t develop that same bond and create their own history.
Kernahan would encourage all Glenelg supporters to join the Club and be part
of the bigger team that turns the Club around. Junior membership is $15 and
Adult Membership starts at $45. For non-football fans a social membership is
only $20. The target is 2006 members, which is a significant increase on the
1495 loyal people who were members in 2005.

Great footballer, great clubman, but I would have thought it sensible to appoint someone who will be at most games. Or atleast ALL home games!

Great news, absolute legend, through Symo he showed me through the Carlton rooms and a gave me access to their game plans and conditioning plans in 1996 the year after they won the flag when I was a member of the coaching staff at the Bay (fitness). Parkin says, take a look at anything in this room and take as long as you want, just two conditions, you don't write anything down and nothing leaves the room!!

One of the great blokes in footy, when asked by another player who I was he said, "he's an official of the greatest footy club in Australia - Glenelg"

Six months later he is at Glenelg footy club function and says G'day to me, not the other way around. There are some SANFL reserves players who won't talk to officials at their club, but here is the then reigning AFL premiership captain talking to a pleb like me!!

Just a great bloke!!!

On the strength of that I've signed up me kids as Tiger Cub members
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Mate, my sarcasm detecter with you is always turned up high, but here we go again have a crack at Bays, keep on illustrating that latent envy......

As Digger would say, "you cany deny if you want, but you can't deny it!!!"

PS I'm not sure of you "8 more" statement. Are you saying that only eight more for us to get the 2006 members we require??.....

Do you know something we don't??.......

Methinks it is that crazy sarcasm driven wit of yours.....

I agree with coorong here it is good to see him take the ticket but shouldn't the number one ticket holder be able to attend nearly all the matches in a season. But i suppose it could be worse you might have Mike Rahn as your number one ticket Holder or Mr. A Scott for that matter. :P

#1 ticket holder should be ValleysVirgin.

Would be the most entertaining choice by far.

Any danger in this new being posted on FootySA??? Or is that just an extension of the CDFC website???
We could put up the media relaease about Butcher to bag the Bays but when it is good news.....

Like him or loathe him Stephen Kernahan is one of the greats of SA footy in the last 25 years. Always put his hand up for State games and refused to leave the SANFL until he won a flag. Over 100 SANFL games. In the same class as Bradley, Platten, Naley, Motley etc who put time into the SANFL before going over.

One of his criteria for his testimonial year at Carlton was that they had to have function in Adelaide in recognition of his career in SA before he went to Melbourne!!

Can someone explain to me what a No 1 ticket holder truly is?

Ive always understood that its someone who either contributes quite substantially in a financial role to their club, perhaps promotes the club substantially in another role for their club or will somehow attract new members to the club.

I fail to see how S.Kernahan will do this, its almost like they've run out of people or noone in SA wanted the gig, even Cornsey would be a better appointment IMHO (involved in more premierships, another club champ and actually attends the occasional game as well as unending support for the Bays on the radio waves).

I would have thought Super Carey but Sticks is just as good. Lived and Bred to be part of this great club. Part of a great GFC family.
