MEDIA RELEASE
CHANGING OF THE GUARDS FOR THE SANFL COMMISSION

After more than 35 years of service to the League, the SANFL wishes to advise that Vice President, John Halbert MBE, will retire from the SANFL Commission tomorrow night, to be replaced by former Glenelg Champion, Peter Carey OAM.
Mr Halbert commenced his service to the SANFL joining the Football Development Foundation in 1970, and was appointed to Chairman of this Foundation from 1993 to 2005. His services were also received as Chairman of State Selectors, member of the SANFL Umpires Board as well as Chairman of Selectors for the Adelaide Football Club in their early years in the competition. Mr Halbert’s credits also include serving as member of the AFL Laws Committee since 2000 and receiving Life Membership to both the SANFL and AFL.
SANFL President, Mr Rod Payze said “the League wishes to thank John Halbert for his outstanding service to football in Australia, in particular to football in South Australia. His service, commitment and passion for the game has been instrumental in helping shape the game of football as it is today. The League extends best wishes to John, his wife Chris and extended family for the future”.

John Halbert MBE –
• 244 games and 253 goals for Sturt Football Club (1955 – 1968)
• Captain of Sturt Football Club from 1962 – 1968
• Captain of the Sturt Premiership team in 1966
• 16 games for South Australia
• Magarey Medallist in 1961
• All Australian in 1961
• Awarded MBE in 1969 for services to sport and work amongst young people
• Coach of Glenelg Football Club from 1979 – 1982
• Coach of Sturt Football Club in 1983 – 1984
• State of Origin Selector from 1992 – 1998
• Chairman of Selectors of the Adelaide Football Club from 1992 – 1994
• SA Football Hall of Fame induction in 2002
• AFL Life Membership in 2005
• Football Development Foundation Committee from 1970 – 2005
• Chairman of Football Development Foundation Committee from 1993 – 2005
• SANFL Commissioner from February 1996 – March 2008

Mr Halbert will continue his work in his family business, Human Kinetics, and hands the reins over to for former Glenelg Champion and current State Manager of Coca-Cola Amatil, Mr Peter Carey OAM.
Mr Carey joins the League as the newly appointed SANFL Commissioner, tomorrow night. Following his extensive and outstanding playing career with Glenelg he joined Coca-Cola Amatil in 1983 and after holding the position of State Manager in Tasmania from 2002, Carey returned home to Adelaide in 2007 to assume the position of State Manager in South Australia. 2008 commemorates his 25th year of service with Coca-Cola Amatil.
Peter Carey played an incredible 448 games and kicked 521 goals for Glenelg from 1971 to 1988, captaining the team to Premierships in 1986 and 1987. Following his playing career, Mr Carey served as a Board Member for Glenelg as well as part of the Selection Committee over four seasons.
On behalf of the SANFL, Executive Commissioner Leigh Whicker was delighted with Mr Carey’s appointment. “Peter’s experience as one of the all time greats of football combined with his business acumen is sure to add great value to the Commission.”

• Awarded OAM in 1989
• Board Member for Glenelg Football Club from 1997 – 2000
• Glenelg Football Club Selection Committee in 1996, 1998, 1999 & 2000

Assuming you have copied an SANFL Media Release Wedgie I think you will find that should be 85-86. You would think that they would get it right!!!!

Yep, just copied it (I leave the "Media Release" part on my copy and paste jobs so people are aware)
Ive amended it now, to be truthful I saw Peter Carey had replaced John Halbert and didn't read any more.
Good to see they're sticking with young blood on the SANFL commission. :?

SA FOOTBALL COMMISSIONER STEPS DOWN

The SANFL wishes to advise that Brian Cunningham has formally stepped down from the SA Football Commission due to work commitments.

Congratulations to John Halbert, a wonderful embassador for the game of Australian Rules, not only in SA but on a national level as well. John is also a very entertaining teller of footy stories and I've had the pleasure of his company many times.

AH, that news was back in 2008, the thread was bumped by 85 WAS A GOOD YEAR in relation to Bucky Cunningham stepping down

A similar bump about umpires resgning stuffed me too. Can people please just create new topics when things like this happen please.
