Dear Eagles Online Member,
Internal Trial
The Eagles played an internal trial at Thebarton Oval this morning (Sat 4/3/06) in very warm conditions as their first competitive hit out of the new season. It was a great chance for Ron Fuller and the coaches to see all the hard work of the summer come together under match conditions. A blue Eagles outfit matched up against the white Barry Stoodley Pty Ltd unit.

The blue team was very strong to begin the match with Jason Earl, David Westbrook and co working beautifully through the middle of the ground. The delivery of the midfield to the key forwards of Adam Grocke (2 goals) and Travis Oakley (7) who were causing some headaches in their first trial in Eagles colours was of a high standard.

The match although the score suggests a one sided affair was very competitive and a good basis to start the season from. In particular the skill level and intensity was at a high level early on. As the game progressed in the hot conditions they started to take effect and at times the skill level and intensity dropped slightly. As a whole the coaching staff walked away happy and with no major injuries can look forward to next week when things will step up again against South Adelaide at Noarlunga.

Other players to feature prominently in the blue side were Leigh Treeby who got plenty of the ball and delivered well, Ryan Kelly out of the back line provided plenty of run and support, whilst Chris Stacey, Craig Fitzgerald and Matthew Bolton did some very nice things in their first match for the Club.

For the whites Mark McKenzie collected plenty of the ball and showed his class with Jon Floreani continually finding the ball and stopping many blue forays forward. New recruit Brad Dabrowski battled hard up forward early and then in the ruck whilst Brad Coles, James Stewart and Iszac Thompson once moved to defence worked hard and provided plenty of run.

Blue - 18.15.123 d White 8.4.52

Best Players
Blue Team - Leigh Treeby, Jason Earl, Travis Oakley, Adam Grocke, Ryan Kelly

White Team - Mark McKenzie, Jon Floreani, Matthew Bolton, Brad Coles

Goals
Blue Team - Travis Oakley - 7, Adam Grocke, Jason Earl, Craig Fitzgerald, David Westbrook - 2, Leigh Treeby, Damien Williamson, Matthew Bolton - 1

White Team - Sam Jericho, Matthew Bolton - 2, Brad Moore, Jase Morris, Todd Price, James Stewart - 1

Glad to see a couple of ex Rooster lads fitting in nicely at the eagles - wish them well for the 2006 season with the exception of the games against their old club

Good to see most of our new recruits had a fairly decent first hit out for the club. All looks very promising, can't wait to see it all take shape as of first official trial against South @ Noarlunga. Were there any other trials this weekend and if so I wonder how they went.

Well if they keep kicking goals in trial games then you would say that you probably will see them Rd 1 at prossie.

Bunkered myself in a rabbit burrow at the southern end. Most encouraging feature of the internal was the very good form shown by Adam Grocke and Travis Oakley. These two players will certainly be in the opening lineup if they are not injured - the Eagles have no other big forwards at the moment ( Passador suffering another hamstring injury) and Dabrowski was very poor at CHF in the first half, he put in a better effort in ruck in the second half. Brad Coles was very impressive at CHB. Our number one recruit Luke Jarrad (flash) had a difficult time getting into the game, appears to be more of a link man than "go in and get it player". I won't make a judgement on him yet, its not in my nature to do this. David Westbrook's form was very encouraging. Daniel Roberts is a youngster to watch - 6'2' - 6'3' very atheletic and enthusiastic but needs to improve skills.

The overall result of the trial was hard to determine as many players changed teams at half time to enable different combinations to be tried and to get challenging match ups. Next week against South will give supporters a better indication.

My mind travels back to last season when we played Port at thebbie and they beat us by 100 points our big name players were out injured then as well.
