Good Friday Football

Sitting here on today and I started thinking again how boring Good Friday is without footy. I'd like to see the SANFL season start a week early with a blockbuster under lights. We need footy on Good Friday. Even the NRL play on Good Friday. What are your thoughts.

couldnt agree more ehl.nothing else on entertainment wise , could even have a double header at adelaide oval and make a real good atmosphere and a bumper crowd to kick off the season. imagine port vs central then eagles vs north or vise versa!

The problem is the state & federal laws that relate to working on Good Friday and the no serving of Alcohol on the day.

Good Friday and Christmas Day have a more reduced bus and train time table than ordinary public holidays. Which makes transport to the game a difficulty.

Wages are set at triple time for everyone that works on the day - umpires, caterers, car park attendants etc making the cost of putting it on prohibitive.

There is no alcohol service and you cant bring alcohol into Adelaide Oval so the takings for the day then reduce significantly.

With playing on Good Friday there just seems to be a whole host of problems and which most likely dont outweigh the benefits, otherwise I think that the SANFL would definatley look into it!

Great post sojourner, your points are the only reason why Good Friday isn't/shouldn't be played on Good Friday.
It's time these archaic laws got the arse.

Providing that people retain their triple time then I agree Wedgie!

i just watched the crusaders v waratahs s14 match big crowd, the brumbies v cheetahs match on now & it looks like a great crowd, two rugby league matches on soon & i'm sure they will have a big crowd, football is in the entertainment bracket so why is a picture theatre allowed to show movies on good friday ? & i remember going to nightclubs on good friday nights, as soon as one league does it & sees its success rate they'll all program matches on good friday night

Agreed goraw a double header at venue like Adelaide Oval would be a perfect way to kick off the new season. I would love to see a Port v Norwood and Eagles v North or something like that. We just need footy on Good Friday.

Don't know what the hell you guys are thinking of, being innovative, promoting the comp and drawing a big crowd to a game of football in the SANFL?
Foolish, you'd never get a gig on the commission.

How does a comp like the NRL make such a success out of it then !!!

I believe that the current system of no football on Good Friday is fine. Allow players to always have this day and Christmas day off. We should be able to cope with two days a year without sport. After all, how many of you would love to be forced to work on these days?
Cheers

Probably a silly question but do the players want to play at Easter or would they rather spend a long weekend with family/friends/church/DIY or whatever ??? I suspect even footy players have a life :D Just a thought.

true JAS but if Easter fell later in the year (April) they'd play on the Saturday/Sunday/Monday anyway...there goes the long weekend.

Also can anyone explain to me why Christmas Day is always the 25th Dec, yet Easter moves every year...How can someone die on a different day :?

triple time, bloody nora, I worked it and I don't get triple time

and if you use your brains you hit the restaurants on Hanson Road that open at 10am, get your booze fix from there, they did a roaring trade today.

If you can let me know what occupations get triple time for working I would appeciate it so I can have another fight with the union
