would that put john cahill down as the all time greatest coach ? i'd say yes it would have to be ranked higher than the other greats like oatey, kerley etc

Who cares! If South went top folks like me would have overloaded with substance abuse and would be having life saving surgery in order to recover. As for JC he would take on the mantle of the original JC.

He'd have to be the original JC to pull that off!

Who's to say Jack isnt already ranked above Oatey and Kerley. I think his record has definately got Kerls covered.

Yep, got Kerls covered for sure and IMHO is at least equal with Oatey.

Agreed with others, Jack passed Kerls many many moons ago.

Nope.

Cahill might have walked on water at Port, but his record as coach of other teams (Port Power, Collingwood, West Adelaide, SA SOO and SANFL teams) is lacklustre.

He deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as Kerley and Oatey, but only in a specific comparative context, i.e. "John Cahill, unlike Kerley and Oatey, failed to achieve success at more than one club".

Kerley and Oatey both had success at multiple clubs, therefore Kerley & Oatey >> Cahill.

Bull5hit Pseudo.

Cahill improved both Collingwood (who were a financial basket case at the time & nearly bankrupt) & West Adelaide (took them to the 85 Prelim in his 1st year), layed the foundation at PP (he was given the job initially out of respect, but it was never long term).
SoO- meh, who cares- you hardly have time to get your squad together, let alone playing the brand of football you want.

Jack Oatey/Fos Williams
John Cahill
the rest

On-field Collingwood was traditionally one of the stronger VFL clubs at the time, despite an average year or two prior to Cahill's arrival. One finals campaign in three years (IIRC) should be expected as a bare minimum. A great coach might have done better.

and went steadily backwards thereafter.

Certainly his first season went better than most pundits expected, but if the guy had lived up to the hyperbole then he might at least have gotten them to at least one finals appearance in two seasons.

One expects a truly great coach to achieve a comfortable victory over such lesser lights as the Tasmanian state team.

A capable coach, certainly. A good coach, undoubtedly. But not in the same class as the Kerleys and Oateys of the game.

At least, until the Panthers win the flag...

Wouldn't Jack already be one of the BEST

fish & chip makers / coaches

of all time..?

Hasn't he won more premierships than anyone..?

It's funny this topic came up after last night I was reading the Media Guide and pondering the reasons why Jack decided to go one more round with South - Jack must be thinking about his legacy if he were to somehow snare the league record with another flag. I can't imagine anyone coaching 11 premiership teams ever happening again and it would be an incredible achievement.

Of course I'm sure he has other noble reasons for getting back in the ring* but I do bet he gets a little misty-eyed when driving up the Southern Expressway, thinking about what might be...

Jack Cahill has been and still is an outstanding coach, and as for the call on his lacklustre effort with port power? You must be joking! He managed to bring together basically an SANFL squad of players with a few recruits and made them very competetive from the start. He may have a basic game plan playing tough uncompramising football, but he sure knows how to get the best out of what he has at his disposal.
I wish he had been the Crows innagural coach instead of Graham Cornes,he may have left an even better legacy!! :D

If South went top this year then a number of things would happen:

An inquiry to match fixing as to how it happened and how much 8 other teams profited.
SANFL Footy Tipping Comps would close.
Sites like this would be silent in terms of position finishes and forecasting Final 5 and GF favorites.
A run of suicides from supposed experts on here who don't barrack for South.
A run of heart attacks and associated medical conditons from the shocked Panthers fans.
The return of "Ripley's believe it or not".

and finally I would give up following or commenting on Football for South showing up the complete lack of knowledge and judgement I have (and I suspect quite a few others would join me) plus the complete anger and shame in my team finishing lower than South this year.

As they say "stranger things have happened" but how strange would it be if South won the flag???

Fos,Jack X 2.

Surely modern day success (dominance no less) weighs more heavily on the scales than 'old time' premierships?

It does in my book.
