MEDIA RELEASE
50TH ANNIVERSARY RICHMOND OVAL
26 APRIL 2008

On Saturday, 26 April 2008, the West Adelaide Football Club celebrates its 50th Anniversary at Broadspectrum Oval (Richmond Oval) against the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles.
The date of this game is significant in that it is the exact date of our first ever match at Richmond Oval which was against West Torrens.
To help us celebrate this wonderful occasion, we will be introducing the past players from both teams who played in the first ever match at Richmond Oval, to the crowd prior to the start of the League match.
Attached is an article from our Club Historian titled 50 Years at Richmond , the 1958 Team Listing and also a photo page highlighting our first ever match at Richmond Oval.

Best pasties in the world !!!!!

That's pasties as in the vegetable and pastry culinary delight, not pasties as the things that get stuck to the nipples of strippers :D

White shorts was West's official uniform at the time and for a fair while after that.

My Grandad was one of the volunteers that worked to build the Richmond Oval. Many people may not be aware that most of what was done there was by volunteer labor. Many members of the club rolled their sleeves up to get the project up and running at a considerable amount of cost to themselves, but naturally for their sheer passion for the club! Good to see Westies celebrating that this weekend!

why would they want to do that? The SAAFL has just taken up residence along with the SANFL umpires assocation.

I heard that too FC, something to do with the gorund not being on a busy road (Glenelg, Norwood) or part of a major 'town centre' (Elizabeth, Noarlunga). Think more dollars could be brought in at Thebby?

Haven't the SAAFL secured the lease at Thebbie Oval? Would make for interesting co-tenants.

I was a volunteer that helped build the spa bath in the home change rooms during the 80s. (probably 85)
I was a junior at the time.
Spent a day working along side Dale 'Chooka' Woodhall, Ron Andrews & a few others.
Chooka was heaps funny, couldnt shut him up and had a joke about everything.
Ron was silent and a bit scary. I was just hoping that i didnt do anything to piss him off.

Not sure if the spa is still there. Wouldnt be suprised if it has fallen apart since.

West has had many home grounds, Jubilee Oval, Adelaide Oval, Kensington Oval, Show Grounds, Adelaide Oval No. 2 and Now Richmond.
I will be attending with Jodie and the Twins. I am soo proud their first Westies Game. We look forward to catching up with all the Westies Faithful and a few others from this site.
