Whats the problem with Port Magpies?

Timmy I hope you read this! Was at the maggies game today again and from a close outsider looking in alot of the boys looked under pressure to the point of very nervous. I believe the club lives too much in the past from the coaching staff to the board to many supporters and it has an effect on the players. Some might say, "they need to learn THE PORT ADELAIDE CULTURE". Thats fine and yes that is what made their successful era so brilliant but i believe their is a better way of teaching it. Timmy and others should begin talking in the present and not the past, for example instead of saying things like "we USED to intimidate the opposition", try " LETS intimidate the opposition by...bla bla bla" I truly believe this is the problem in many areas of the club. The young guys are probably shitting themselves trying to live up to the greats of the past that is too often shoved down their throats. It happened tonight during presentations. If they have the talent they will succeed their own way helped by some encouraging guidence and they can create THEIR OWN piece of history.

I don't think there's a lot wrong with them, they didn't make the finals last year playing a Grand Finalist, were outsiders today according to the bookies with some big name players missing and still played the better footy.
A couple of tweaks to today's performance and they're right in the mix for a finals berth IMHO.
To be realistic, if it wasn't for North not having a bench Port could have taken more out of the game than North.

Because she wanted to meet me! :D

And a pleasure it was meeting you today too pom pom! :D

PS Lots of people watch games not involving their own club when for some reason its easier to get to one SANFL match over another, better to go to one game rather than none. (unlike me this Friday who will be at the MCG instead of Adelaide Oval  )

Yep, our goal kicking is letting us down, cost us the game today and the game against South. We should be 3-1 but instead are 1-3.

Definatly need to improve our goal kicking. We had three late chances today and missed all of them.

The Roosters have put a curse on Alberton. The shots were straight but the goal posts moved

But you didn't know that they were going to move the game back to Adelaide Oval when you booked for the MCG game.

Even easier to stay there for presentations instead of going back to your own club too by the looks!

pom pom, you seem very worried about Timmy. How are those mighty Bloods travelling?

Port seem to put alot of uneccessary pressure on themselves kicking for goal, knowing how important the goal is 30 metres out, some looked like they wanted someone else to take the kick, unusual obviously no confidence, just back yourself in & kick through the ball.
I felt for Hargy yesty, he was one who obviously missed alot of opportunities, he had no trouble getting the ball, just finishing it off was, you tend to have those bad days once & a while but Port are having it more than once. I noticed Hargs stabbed at the ball a few times, rather than kick through it, the previous week he kicked 10.3 & this week 5.7.
That unfortunately is football.

How much difference would a "FIT" Byron make to this team...?

To our competition..?

How dissapointing for us SANFL'ers.... :( :(

Agree with you NM, Hargy took the ball 35m out and was looking to pass off. He was very reluctant to kick at goal and be the hero. He has kicked many a goal and played some good AFL footy, with his experience he should have gone back taken all the time in the world and slotted it. It shouldnt have been left for a rookie to try and slot one 50m out on the boundary in his first game.
Having said that, some good signs from Port , the kids are developing at a very good rate, and there is some quality to come back in , after the bye. With a bit of luck we would be 3 and 1, but we go into the bye at 1 and 3 with some work to do.

Summo was fantastic on the weekend, 42 touches, believe he is averaging about 30 touches a game for the year. No one from the opposition seems to rate him. If he had some pace he would certainly get a run on an AFL list. I know Freo were very keen on him.

first things first if Port kicked straight and stopped Clayton doing stupid things then they would have won the game. simple 8)

Clayton doing stupid things is a part of his whole package. He does enough brilliant things to make up for it. I rate him as one of the best players to ever pull on the black and white guensey.

I run with a similar theory on the Gowans - they spend some games giving away dumb 25/50m penalties, but that's part of their make up. If they didn't do that, I have no doubt all of their other games would be nowhere near the quality they are currently. Clayton would be the same - it's his over competitive temperament that causes the boilovers and the brilliance.
