WOODVILLE-WEST TORRENS’ TRAVIS LANE WINS ROUND 4 COCA-COLA STAR SEARCH AWARD NOMINATION

Travis Lane from the Woodville-West Torrens Football Club has been named the Round Four Coca-Cola Star Search Award nominee.

At just 16 years of age, and in his second League appearance, Lane displayed maturity well beyond his years in the Eagles’ 35-point win over Norwood at Coopers Stadium on Friday night.

Playing as a small crumbing forward, Travis accumulated 9 possessions, including six kicks, three handballs, three marks and two goals in the first quarter.

Currently the youngest player playing League football, Travis’ performances in the Eagles’ U17 trial matches over the summer saw him named in the Reserves side for rounds one and two, before making his League debut in round three against the Port Adelaide Magpies.

Travis, a talented cricketer, attends St Michaels College and represented South Australia in the 2007 NAB AFL Under 16 Championships in Queensland. He is the Eagles first Coca-Cola Star Search Nominee for the 2008 season.

What is the criteria for eligiblity to win this award? I'm assuming that AFL listed players are ineligible?

Introduced last season, the Coca-Cola Star Search Award recognises the talented youngsters making their mark in League ranks.
To be eligible for the Award, nominees are required to meet the following criteria:

· players must have played no more than 8 State League games at the start of the 2008 season
· players must be aged 21 or under at January 1, 2008
· AFL rookies are eligible for the award unless promoted to the senior list of their AFL club
· Players who are suspended by the tribunal during the 2008 season are ineligible to win the award

Following each round of the home and away season, each competing club nominates one eligible player from their team. A review panel then selects one player as the Coca-Cola Star Search Award nominee.

The review panel consists of:

Glen Rosser (General Manager - State League Competition)

David Hutton (General Manager – Game Development)

Daniel Thomas (SANFL Football Services Manager)

Brenton Phillips (SANFL Talent Manager)

On the completion of the minor round, one of the 23 nominees will be chosen, by the review panel as the 2008 Coca-Cola Star Search Award Winner. The award carries a winner’s purse of $2000.

The Coca-Cola Star Search Award Winner will be presented the Award at the Magarey Medal Presentation Dinner.

Thanks Wedgie. I was thinking Taylor Walker's debut last week was more impressive, but he is on Adelaide's senior list and therefore inelgible. Thanks for clearing that up.

Another Saint Michael's College lad along with Lee Staple

Both went through the Beverley and Henley Campus'

Travis is a superb cricketer too - As a year four, he played in my Primary A side. He scored a century last year playing first XI against (PAC or St Peters - Cant recall which one)

Matthew Broadbent is eleven months older than Travis Lane and is also a gun cricketer. The U17 carnival held over two weeks in January Broadbent opened the batting and bowling for West Torrens that went through the 2007 carnival as undefeated premiers.
