North Adelaide defied the inclement weather to thrash Central District in the Under 17s today. The Dogs kicked the first goal of the game but it was pretty straight-forward after that.

North 7.3 17.9 23.12 33.17 (215)
Centrals 2.0 3.2 4.2 5.2 (32)

LOL.
Like most U17/U19 teams, form is a fickle thing.
Check out the 100+ losses by your U17s and U19s last season, coupled with mega 100+ wins.

I'm ever astounded by the blow-outs of under age footy.

Think as Wedgie says, it has a lot to do with whose available and whose not, once you lose a few your 17's they end up with 14 and 15 years old playing, great for their experience but not so good when they get a continual belting, North 17's from memory lost their 1st or 2nd game by 100 plus so I know what you are saying ST

I wonder, would a single U18 comp be more beneficial then? There are merits for both th current system and single age comp...

I think that the under 19s and 17s have been quite even of recent years as there has been not too many of these scores (or margins)

This is the average winning margin of the Under 17s from 1970:

1970 30.32
1971 43.37
1972 42.39
1973 39.12
1974 36.44
1975 39.26
1976 40.67
1977 39.86
1978 34.76
1979 56.91
1980 53.13
1981 39.12
1982 55.98
1983 58.16
1984 65.76
1985 63.12
1986 46.51
1987 55.64
1988 65.03
1989 53.77
1990 70.96
1991 48.61
1992 31.90
1993 47.30
1994 49.87
1995 35.47
1996 50.10
1997 58.98
1998 61.55
1999 45.85
2000 45.06
2001 67.01
2002 53.91
2003 41.90
2004 44.20
2005 55.96
2006 56.70
2007 46.73

And just thinking about it, what is the biggest factor in swinging fortunes in the 17s is the Independent Schools matches, which take precedent over 17s.

I've been wanting an Under 18 competition instead of U19s & U17s since 1991. Generally, any player who is 18 and still playing U19s footy realistically will never make it to league football. I can't help thinking that some clubs retain players in the U19s in an attempt to win U19s flags, or to fill positions, rather than promote them into the seconds.

Premiership success in junior competitions doesn't guarantee success at senior level, so I don't see the need for two underage competitions.

Lies, damn lies and statistics.

The U19s could be an interesting comparison too.

Can you get the median score for the same period in a chart - a better indictor. We may well have had games all around 30 to 50 points (avg. 40), or games 5 to 75 (avg. 40).

Yesterday, West had a player in the 17's who had played something like 40 odd games. What is he going to do in the 19s? play another 40 odd games, before playing reserves.

I've also put the average score in there because higher scoring years tend to have bigger margins:

A 30-goal loss one week, a draw the next. Central District blew a six-goal lead before ultimately drawing with Glenelg 13.10 (88) apiece in the U/17 at Elizabeth today.

And South Adelaide clinched a thrilling one-point win - 112 to 111 - in the U/17 against North Adelaide on the other side of the earth at Noarlunga.

Our first points in the underage for the season!

Spelly what's the lowest combined margin in a round of 17s? Four fantastic matches this round, a high-scoring 16-point win to Sturt and the other three had a combined difference of three points.

Port Magpies 13.11 (89)
West Adelaide 13.9 (87)

South Adelaide 16.16 (112)
North Adelaide 17.9 (111)

Sturt 21.22 (148)
Eagles 20.12 (132)

Centrals 13.10 (88)
Glenelg 13.10 (88)

It most certainly is since 1970. The average winning margin of 4.75 points easily beats the 10 point average set in Rounds 3 and 6 in 1995.

I'll also elaborate on one particular match there which set many records.
