SANFL or SAFL?

In the discussion about the upcomming state game on 5AA, Ken Cunningham stated that he does not care for the SANFL calling itself the South Australian National Football League and suggested that he would like to see us called the South Australian Football League - SAFL. Both Ken and Graham baulked at the idea of it being called AFLSA though.
I am not sure of the history of why the SANFL was called that, maybe someone in here like Spelly knows?
Anyway clearly we are not a National competition, and with the SANFL managment saying not yet to the NT side, we are unlikely to be any form of National competiton in the near future. So my question is then should it be changed from SANFL to SAFL?
Thoughts?

National was added about a year after the ANFC was formed, 1927. The N is not intended to stand for "this league is national" but actually "the national game".

The same question was asked in a recent online survey that the SANFL had done by a company called Squareholes*. It was asking for opinions on how the SANFL brand is perceived and how it might be improved IIRC
I opted for SAFL so it's in keeping with VFL, WAFL etc
KG and Cornsey also mentioned the SANFL logo which was on the survey too.

If we want to keep in with other leagues we'll probably have to call it AFLSA soon!
NO WAY!!

Keep it as it is.
Just the thought of the AFLSA makes me want to

It should be SAFL, technically speaking
Or maybe SA-AFL (everyone starts to

)
But the SANFL has a nice ring to it so I'll be a traditionalist for a change and vote for that

Agree with you there, I cant see a good reason for changing it, so just leave it alone is my suggestion!

Like hondo said, it has a nice ring to it, and it's how it is know to everyone. I don't see how dropping the N would attract new fans.

Have to others changed their names ? Not being funny...I thought they were VFL, WAFL etc
FWIW I'd never vote for the AFLSA option.

WAFL were WANFL for a while, but changed back to WAFL in about 1980 I think. Then for a few years in the 90s they were Westar Rules! Sensibly they changed back again.

Well rip me a new one, who comes up with this sh1t?
(quick edit= I mean sh1t name, thanks for the info Spelly

)
I agree with Hondo, the SANFL does have a nice ring to it. I'd always assumed that the National bit stood for "National Football", not "National League" anyway.

I remember when I was a kid I had a footy that had NFL on the side of it. The NFL as I understood it oversaw the state leagues, VFL, SANFL, WAFL, QAFL etc, etc.
They disbanded sometime during the late 70's or 80's but we kept the N in our title.
Someone with more knowledge history wise may be able to tell me/us more about the NFL.

I've done the survey too and have supported retaining the name SANFL - keep the tradition!
If KG and the **** **** showed genuine support for the SANFL then they might have a right to provide commentary on this issue. But as they don't, they can **** off.

Of course another option, albeit an unlikely one, would be for the others to adopt or readopt the 'N'...eg VNFL, WANFL.

The NFL was a spineless joke.
IIRC, the 14 voting members consisted of 8 VFL, 2 SANFL, 2 WAFL, 1 TFL and 1 ACT or something close to that.
The NFL never had a hope of getting anything through the VFl disagreed upon or blocking anything the VFL proposed........IT WAS A JOKE...
It's a pity, because if it acted like a TRUE ruling body with equal voting the AFL as it is today might be like it should with true clubs competing rather than composite sides.

I am assume the *'s are KG's side kick Alby, living in Melbourne would you care to comment on the SANFL games you've seen Graham Cornes at? Goes to the Bay pretty regularly mate and IS a supporter of the SANFL.
