Round 12: Eagles vs Sturt Review

Postby spell_check » Sat Jun 21, 2008 6:24 pm

Two years ago (Rd 16) at Unley, I just summed up the match by rattling out the records. Today, it's only best to sum up the match by doing the same:

Sturt's highest score against Eagles, beating 19.9 (123) in Round 4 1994, which was actually a losing score
The previous highest winning score by Sturt against Eagles was 17.19 (121) in Round 3 2002. This match was the other win at Woodville and was Sturt's highest score against Eagles at Woodville.
Highest winning margin by Sturt against Eagles, previous was 51 points in the 2002 match.
Best third quarter against Eagles, previous was 6.6 (42) in the 2002 match.
Lowest score by Eagles against Sturt at Woodville, previous lowest was 9.11 (65) in Round 6 1999, which was actually a winning score.
Lowest losing score by Eagles against Sturt at Woodville, previous lowest was 11.4 (70) in the 2002 match.

And poor old Fiacchi tried his guts out today, everyone else was just dazzled like a rabbit in the headlights. Oh well, at least we haven't been the only team to lose like this against Sturt this year. And we still are Sturt's bitches under the SAFooty Bitch Rules, but most likely only until the Unley match.

One team was good. One team was bad. Thought Herring was one of the best players in the 2nd quarter when the game was up for grabs. Sturt had many, Eagles had no winners at all. A dark day, but sadly, not very surprising.

I am not going to have a tirade here .So firstly well done Sturt you are at this stage a flag favourite .Great game well done .
What happened to the eagles runner in the last term?

Eagles what a rabble again . 2 out of the last three weeks rabble rabble rabble . I am still fuming
The only thing missing was the sniper on the grassy knoll aiming at the coaches box .
And next week Centrals :( another team to play back into form.

Thought Sturt might win, but wasnt expecting that sort of margin. Having said that, the eagles were pretty average last week.

McGlone get much of it? Seems to be struggling a bit this year

I'd say he still has more of an impact than our recruits.

There was some seriously good footy played by Sturt today. The forward line looked unbeatable and the defence held the Eagles to just 4 goals until rubbish time. BOG for mine was Luke Crane, closely followed by Herring. Difficult to split them actually. Deluca had an excellent game also, rucked well all day in the absence of Feast, and did some good defensive work. Thommo also had his moments again but looked a bit ginger* in the last half...not as "ginger" as an Eagle though!

It wasn't a perfect day, however. Feast looks like he's going to miss a few games and the injury to Gregory looked very bad. Nelson also struggled but played on injured until the Sharples fiasco had been sorted out. To win like that with essentially 17 men for half the game...to finally beat the Eagles...and for it to be at Woodville of all places...this is a very special win!

p.s. McGlone is travelling OK in the backline, he provides some strong run and a lot of composure.

McGlone has been very consistent, provides good run from defence and has done some gutsy things in games, took a while to find his feet but has consolidated very well.
Spelly, am I right that Sturt did win at Woodville in 2002 by about 7 goals, I've read what you wrote above but was it as early as R3? Agree that Fiacchi was very good today also.
Great effort by the team today showing fantastic character, they must've been absolutely primed for this one.

Sturt sensational football today.

No excuses we were taught a football lesson.

Our runner hit head on cement edge of trainers box - needed a bit of first aid so didnt run last quarter.

3 awards given at presentations
best to Geddes, next to MacGregor with Rimmington 3rd.

I believe Sturt may have a fine to pay re the interchange mix up.

We probably should give refunds to our supporters on today's effort!

The Eagles were very ordinary today - not to take anthing away from Sturt who played superbly. The double blues right now are the deserved flag favourite. With many winners around the ground incl best on ground Herring and he wa ably supported by Sheedy, Chambers with 7 goals, Evans, Crane and Thompson. I thought McGregor tried hard all day but didn't have anyone helping him. I have many questions to ask of the Eagles coaching box at the moment - What in the f*#k are you doing Ronnie please do us all a big favour and quit. We'll be a lot better football club without you at the helm. Once again congratultions to the Sturt FC - you handed us a footy lesson.
