Make no doubt about this this has been an amazing season for attendances at the SANFL.

As at tonight my figures have the SANFL with the highest attendances this decade

2008 - 324,668 (up 32,292 from 2007)
2007 - 292,376
2006 - 284,702

2004 - 288,153
2003 - 285,016
2002 - 316,872
2001 - 317,757
2000 - 314,269

The biggest SEASON total (including grand final) this decade was 2002 with 352,059

A Grand Final crowd on Sunday of 27,392 will surpass that.

NB - these are my figures collated from the newspaper reports, may differ with SANFL official figures.

Spelly do have the totals from 1999 and earlier or will I have to do some more research on Tuesday?

A crowd of 29,778 at the Grand Final will surpass the current highest total this decade of 82,106 from the 2000 series.

1997 - 312,397 (8 less games)
1996 - 399,676 (5 less games)

2 reasons why the crowds are up
A : NW /PA are resurging
B : SANFL footy is real footy and is still a mans game, unlike the sissyish AFL[and people attending the SANFL for that reason]

I also believe value for money is an important factor too
The product is good and the race for the finals going to the last round made for an exciting season.

Plus 2 changes to the top 5 from 2007 gave the finals a new look too.

If West & South played off next year in the GF in front of 20,000 , who cares , why carry on for . Yes, it is all great news that the crowds are up

BUT

if you could take out the true effects of
1) the successful teams being the ones with bigger bandwagons
2) good weather
3) Crows and Port's seasons ending early

then you may still find that the real interest in the competition has declined this year. The fact that under 14,000 came to the Prelim final when the SANFL had everything going for it, is something to be slightly concerned about.

Imagine what the crowd would be for a West-South Prelim final in heavy rain the day after a Crows-Port Grand Final. Maybe 2000?

Prelim likely to be difficult given is the AFL grand final weekend plus had the Bay to Birdwood in direct opposition.
Still the largest stand alone crowd for the year given was Glenelg in all 3 Eagles in the 2 early games and then Sturt.

I know people can get frustrated ferret, but not all Norwood fans make those comments - look at CP for example.
