Did anyone hear this great bloke on Grumpy Old Men during the week?
What a genuinely nice bloke and lover of football he is.
I can't believe some of the amazing statistics he is responsible for:
1. Only man to be sacked and reinstated as coach (1983 Glenelg)
2. Only man to be coached by and then coach the same bloke (Fitzroy) I cant remember the name of the guy.
3. Coached Fitzroy to a reserves premiership and wasn't even given an interview for the vacant league job the next year.
4. Took West Perth from wooden Spoon to Premier.
5. Had an impossible pocket named after him which wasn't even recognised by the host of the show.

His name is Graham Campbell. He used to talk so fast that the Glenelg boys couldn't understand him, but very enthusiatic about his footy and seemed like a nice guy.

Arguably the funniest of all the things he used to say. I can't believe I forgot it.

Probally the best coach the bays have had, should of coached them longer as 85/86 premierships were his babies with no disrespect to Cornsey.
Apparently was sacked then reinstated as coach after players protested to get him back.

Very true I was at the game he was reinstated at I think from memory that West Torrens held the record for the number of goals kicked in a quater pre AFL days after that game.

I understand how you would arrive at that impression Troy but you might want to chat to a few players who actually played under him before drawing any conclusions. I think you'll find it had more to do with concerns about who was in 'the gun' to replace him as senior coach rather than the players believing he was the best man for the job. He had some very 'unusual' and 'courageous' (read:wierd) ideas about footy. The fact he has not coached since at any level should be a bit of a clue too.
Graham Cornes was responsible fo 85/86, no one else. If you need any further evidence of what a coach can do with a good squad (for better or worse) check out the Eagles under Fuller or St Kilda under Thomas.

Wihtout knowing for sure, as a fan of an opposition team I always felt this way VV .. Certainly I felt confident of getting past the Bays during Campbell's tenure, but definitely couldn't say the same whilst Cornesy was at the helm ...
I wonder if the player he was coached by and also coached was Kevin Murray?

The St Kilda list is overrated in my opinion. Thats not to say I rate Thomas as a coach.
Tell me which flag the Eagles should have won? Each of the four Grand Finals Centrals were the better side.

I use to see him at a deli near where I worked at lunchtimes in the mid-80's. He didn't know me from Adam but always obliged me with a great chat about what was going in footy at the time (and me a North Supporter

)
A genuinely nice man. Love Him!!!!!!
Also it was Kevin Murray that coached him and he coached.

Interestingly he feels that the suspension of Carey cost the Bays the 84 flag. Given the evenness of the comp: that finals series he may have a few backers.

Well, the Bays didn't get off to the best of starts under Campbell in '83, losing their first 8 games, even dropping one to Woodville!
From memory, their first win of the year was against Port by five points, the same weekend SA lost to WA in Perth by four goals.

Glenelg supporters carp on about this but Port touched them up in every game that year, including an easy seven goal win in the Second-Semi.
Besides, they can't blame Laurie Argent for kicking 11.23 in the Preliminary Final.

Close, the week before that match they beat Centrals after 8 losses.
