FOOTY FANS FLOCK TO SANFL MATCHES
Local Footy fans are voting with their feet, showing renewed enthusiasm for the SANFL’s
attacking style of football. As attendance levels rapidly climb, 32,356 fans have come along
to enjoy SANFL matches over the past 2 rounds.
SANFL Executive Commissioner Leigh Whicker says the League is thrilled with the support as local footy
fans head back to catch the SANFL action this season. “ Our marketing campaign ‘Local Footy – Keeping
it Real ‘ has been strongly focussed on the man on man physical clashes and the fast flowing attacking
style of SANFL footy and our coaches and players are delivering that popular style to the fans. When
that product is complemented by the low price of $8 for adults and free entry for kids under 18 we
expect footy lovers to react the way they have, and we are delighted. The competition is fresh with new
power teams such as North Adelaide and Port Magpies performing well and teams such as Glenelg,
Norwood and South showing exciting promise. Our programming has been well thought out with Friday,
Saturday and Sunday fixtures giving families flexibility. The year is shaping up as an attendance boom
for us ”.
The SANFL’s General Manager of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Paul Anderson, points to last
weekend’s clash between Glenelg and North Adelaide as evidence of the excitement attacking man on
man football is delivering to the League’s growing flock of fans. “That match saw 18 goals scored in the
second quarter alone. The fans want to see teams aggressively attack and back themselves in. They
certainly got that last weekend and they know they can expect it every week because our teams are
being coached to play entertaining, exciting footy. The fans know we are ‘Keeping it Real’ - the footy
they played or watched before tagging, chipping and closing teams down became the trend.”
This weekend’s action sees North Adelaide taking on reigning Premiers Central District at Adelaide Oval,
on Friday night. Saturday afternoon showcases South Adelaide and Glenelg at Noarlunga Oval and Sturt
battle West Adelaide at Unley Oval in what could be a season defining match for both. On Sunday
SANFL action heads back to Thebarton Oval for the “Battle of the Birds” when the Eagles fight for the
points against the might of the Magpies. TV and radio broadcast times are detailed on the SANFL

Now, is the SANFL going to continue with whatever advertising they do? Or are they going to rest on their laurels and do nothing or cut back because they've got an increase in crowds?

I honestly think its the evenness of the comp and a bit of luck with the programming and weather that's prompted crowd rises this year, IMHO it has nothing to do with the advertising the SANFL is doing, they've got to do a lot more than they do currently and do it better.

Agree totally. SANFL - especially Anderson - still trying to justify their advertising campaign after getting hammered in the press last season.

I think the publicity from the clubs - regarding new signings etc has been a factor. Plus the fact that the clubs that have had bigger followings are doing better this year.

All this pre-season histeria, about the salary cap, focused on the negative aspect of recruiting. The current increased attendances are the positive side of it, with teams improving the skill level of the competition, people want to come & see the SANFL. Peopple want to see good footy & players. Nick Gill is an excitement machine in his own right.

I think the fact there was a lot of publicity surrounding the recruiting North and Port have done is a factor. Also the fact both clubs have done nothing for a while brings their supporters out. I reckon the fact its not so predictable might have had an influence. ie. Centrals are no longer a shoe in.
