In the light of some discussion regarding players with big reputations and then performing well lets say not up to scratch - who have you ever thought after the game what were they thinking in recruiting this guy.

Easy, WARREN RALPH, Game set match to us with the biggest Dud

Danny Hughes tried to smash him but Ralph was too quick running to the backlines, maybe Ralph invented the flood before Eade did?? I think Ralph ended up dragging himself!!

Honourable mentions to:

Craig Elias
Stephen Rattray
Scott Jordon
Glen Keast
Leigh Tudor
Paul Dimmatina ?? I think stayed for two weeks then left in 2001 or 2002

talkin to a North supporter then and they told me they wondered what they were thinkin when they took Gilligan in the SANFL mini draft. Also they mentioned an AFL recruit around the time when Hargraves started from an AFL club he was a forward - who was that ??????

Port, in both their forms, have been lucky that the majority of the name recruits theyve picked up have delivered and ended up big performers.

A couple that havent:

Sam Phillipou was a reasonably high level intra-league recruit. Kicked 10 one night against Norwood at Adelaide and that was as good as it got. Didnt kick many more goals after that.

Hayden Kluver was a Brisbane rookie. Well built and pacey....he just couldnt find the football to save himself. Played 5 matches where he struggled to get a kick and spent the rest of the time doing very little in the reserves.

Shannon Corcoran played AFL at two clubs. Decided to play for Port instead of going to his native Glenelg, but never played a game due to consecutive knee injuries.

WES FELLOWES was much-malinged but he did finish third in the B&F in his one and only year at Alberton - 1991.

GEOFF BLETHYN kicked 100 goals in a year for Essendon but did sweet FA for us. Still, he played in the 1977 premiership team.

GLENN ELLIOTT could only manage one game in 1980.

All these recruits had one thing in common - they had pretty reasonable VFL careers but came to Alberton when they were clearly past their prime and struggled in the SANFL.

GARY SMALLRIDGE had a blistering start to 1991 but didn't adhere to Port's style of play and struggled thereafter.

Not so much a recruit, But John Platten when he came back from Hawthorn.
Ive seen him play better games for the Gawler Districts 35+s
