The only bad thing about Pine Lodge was the runaround you had to go through to get the DVDs. If the SANFL has them more easily available, like on their website, then all good I say (as long as the quality is as good as PL).

Hopefully it'll still have the radio coverage as an audio track as well.

apparantly it won't be the only change........
champion data are going to do the league and u18 stats for all clubs.......
so where does that leave the volunteers that have been doing this for such a long time?........
champion data it would seems needs new people?

I was talking to someone at the weekend who actually does the stats for one of the league clubs and they were saying the same thing about Champion Data.
They also mentioned that Champion Data were only doing the stats for Under 18's and League games so volunteers would still be required to assist with the reserves stats.

if that's correct that's a big kick in the teeth to all those volunteers

Pfft, volunteers have been copping kicks in the teeth over recent years as they've been replaced by professional raffle ticket sellers, hired out food vans, professional bar staff, etc, etc. Its nothing new and stats volunteers are no more special than the rest.
If the papers now use Champion Data instead of their own stats it'll be a huge bonus for us fans.

The people that did the stats for the Advertiser got about $70 for each match. Not exactly volunteering.

Ahh the devil in the detail of our competition change is starting to defuse out of teh SANFL as we try to replicate the Victorian system. The focus is on the League and the U/18s as it is Victoria (read AFL reserves). Problem is though they are two seperate competitions where we have them within teh one.
The Victorianisation of our competition is starting to happen pity we have a different structure to our elite juniors and state league compared to them which effects teh fabric of our clubs.
The quite a bit of disquiet amongst some glenelg officials given that on four seperate occasions our reserves will be playing on different days to the league as they shifted around to accomodate the U/18 competition. This impacts the volunteers and their families as they have to commit to two days now instead of one.
Now some volunteers are being told that they are only good enough for certain jobs as we dumb down our competion to TAC cup and VFL state league competition level.
C'mon DC do something about this amte as State League Manager.
As one Glenelg FC official said on saturday - too many F***en Victorians over here now [in decision making roles out our cubs] F***in' up our competition

Still waiting to hear from the league if my SANFL Weekly Stats report that used to go out to clubs / fans / media will be continuing or has been "restructured".
No drama just yet as it was always arranged in the last few weeks before the season.
I'll let you know what happens.

Kick in the teeth for volunteers? Actually I think of it as a boon for clubs to not need volunteers for this job. Fair enough some will leave if they can't do their favourite job anymore, but really it actually opens up the opportunity for those volunteers to do something else. We all know clubs always want good people around and this just means the chance to worry about one less thing IMHO. Of course, there may be stats the clubs will still take independantly.

This is my understanding of the stats situation. It is all second hand so some details may not be totally correct..
- The AFL recruiters were complaining to the AFL about not receiving good enough stats on SANFL players, so the AFL decided to fund an overhaul of how stats are taken in the SANFL.
- Both Champion Data and Prowess Sports (who run the system in the WAFL using club volunteers to record the "official" stats) put up bids.
- Champion Data won and supposedly will employ people at the game to call the stats via mobile phone to their offices in Melbourne. This will be for the League and U18s only, as their primary objective is just on getting stats for the AFL's benefit, not for the benefit of SANFL clubs.
- Glenelg weren't impressed by Champion Data's proposal, which allegedly involves the SANFL clubs paying good money for these stats, so will still be using volunteers to record all their stats as they have always done.
- I'm not sure what other clubs are doing.
Positives - I'm sure the Champion Data stats will be an improvement on the stats taken by the Advertiser
Negatives - The system has been put in place without considering what is best for the SANFL clubs, just what is best for the AFL talent scouts. I hear that plans are in place for a better compromise for next season.

Westies are continuing to do the stats themselves using volunteers.

I don't see what the problem is. Anyone who attends a SANFL game can take stats for whatever purpose they want, and no one can be stopped from doing so. If the AFL want their stats provider to give them stats, fair enough as long as it doesn't interfere with what SANFL clubs want or cost SANFL clubs anything.

They want to know how many uncontested marks players are taking - the more the better.
Will these actually be published in the Advertiser though?

It's not a problem, just that it could have been done better.
If the AFL has money to spend on SANFL stats, it would be better (for the SANFL) if it was actually spent in a way which benefitted the SANFL clubs, rather than just done to benefit recruiters.

Maybe, but the SANFL have more than enough money to do it properly themselves, but wont because they dont care. Having the stats done by volunteers from the clubs is an unprofessional set up. Not saying that the volunteers do a bad job or anything like that.

Nah, the stats you see in the newspapers are done by someone different from the clubs. The clubs have their own stats teams. So you've got two different groups doing the stats.
