Official Crowd Figues are "bullshit"?

Read the crowd figure in the paper today and I was suprised by the "official" figure - only 4819? You can't tell me there was less at Prospect yesterday than were at the bay the other Sunday as the outer and both ends at Prospect are larger! (Crowd split was probably 60/40 in Port's favour as they always turn out at Propsect). I would be interested to hear the thoughts of other North supporters who went to both the bay and yesterday's game.

I would love to know how the league tallies up the crowd and whether it varies from ground to ground.

Listening to a media person on a radio cross estimate the crowd at Noarlunga when Glenelg played South nearing the end of the ressies, as less than 1000, I was later told by a very reliable source from the SAFC that there was a story going around re a directive issued to bump the figures up by about 300?

This person thought that the final figure less 300 as closer to the actual crowd present. I must say I thought that it was one of those "urban myth" type rumours that do the rounds but after the figures from yesterday nothing would suprise me?

I disagree with both of you, I thought there was about 4600 there and 60/40 North's way.
I'm very confident of the crowd figure as despite going through a media/officials game they made sure they knew exactly how many kids were in the car for counting purposes.
I have doubts about Adelaide Oval's counts at times but 4819 despite being slightly larger than I estimated doesn't suprise me and would be spot on.

That is because at Glenelg we have loyal supporters who back our club wha always turn up to our home games......

Of course we are going to get a bigger gate at the Bay compared to Prossie.....

I thought there was definately more at the Bay, I could virtually walk straight up to the bar or the loo yesterday where I had to line up for 10-15 mins each time at the Bay Oval. Admittedly there was an extra bar at Prospect yesterday, I was amazed that someone at the club had shown some foresight and opened up the bar on the scoreboard hill (and an extra pie van) which hadn't been there for 5 odd years.

The crowd looks huge because the supporters are squeezed in to 3/4 of the ground, with basically **** all behind the northern goals. It would've looked like 10,000 at Alberton!

And it would've BEEN 10,000 yesterday if North marketed the game. The club makes 500 grand a year yet can't pony up for some TV ads?! God damn this is killing me, will the clubs spend SOMETHING on marketing for a change!

Had to line up for the loo at 3/4 time, no problems at the bar, due to the highly efficient service

I know its only a small thing but I didn't see any club besides North place an extra ad in Friday's paper. Plus Magpies fans often go missing after the Power lose to the Crows the preceding week as they're too embarassed to show their faces as their only wardrobe consists of teal.
I'd be more critical of the SANFL's marketing efforts with the amount of money they turn over.

I honestly thought more Port supporters would rock up yesterday being undefeated and top and I thought less North fans would rock up with the team they had.
I was pleasantly suprised on both counts.
Also, the crowd was extremely well behaved in the places I was at yesterday and there was a good security/police presence after what happened last year at Prospect.

I could definitely see why this one was ABC material.

A bit different to be at Prospect for a game other than Centrals and North.

they dont count the ppl that come in after half or 3/4 time but those that come in after this time might only be in the 100's and not 1000's...

U18 get in free. I don't think they are included in the figures, plus the 4 free SANFL games AAMI members receive.
Must have been a 1,000 kids on the oval at 3/4 time having a kick of the footy.

I was staggered to read there was 2700 at the Parade, I tould have thought about 2,000 at best, but there ya go, my crowd estimates are about as good as my tips!! :?

OK if at least 25% of the crowd had at least one kid with them, that would bring the numbers at Prospect to around 6,000 I reckon there was at least 6000 at Prospect on Saturday. If they don't count kids that would explain it.

I actually thoguht it was around 3700 at the start of the match. The people I was with, one of them said there was about 6000 people and two of us turned and said no way...definately under 4000. That was near the start of the match.

Ive definately thought in the past that they must doctor it. Ive seen crowds where there is about 5 people in the whole outer yet the total is 3000+ in the paper and you just think thats gotta be bullcrap.

They do count kids and put them in the figures.
When I drove in the officials/media gate they made a special effort to make sure they knew exactly how many kids I had in the car for the crowd count.
Some people might not notice it as quite often the one taking the tickets isn't the one with the counter in his pocket clicking it over but everyone, adults and kids do get counted.
I'd only doubt the crowd figures at Adelaide Oval as the SANFL don't handle there.

Does anyone remember what the crowd was last year when Port played North at Alberton as I thought there was more there last year, I could move pretty easily around the ground yesterday where last year it was nigh on impossible.
Here's a few more pics of the crowd during the game on Saturday for further evaluation:

Watching the game on tv I thought the crowd looke like 6-7,000. Looking at your photo's only seems to confirm my theory. Definately looks like a bigger crowd than the last few Dogs-Roosters games held there and they would've been in the 4-5,000 region.

P.S. Did the dunnies behind the Groggies bar flood again like every other time you get a good crowd?
