SANFL Draw

Can anyone tell me why North have had a second bye before Glenelg or the Eagles have had one? I think the same thing happened last year... seems very strange to me.

No idea why, but it's ridiculous. In 2 months of footy us North supporters will have had 3 weekends without footy. :x

seems very unfair especially since this bye is two weeks off for the Roosters because of the state game. Though it may give them a chance to get some injured players back on the park.
But it does seem a tad unfair.

Also seems a bit strange that West and Eagles have played twice in 6 weeks at City Mazda Stadium. Not that it worries me about going there twice, BBQ is fantastic!!

Agree it is hard to understand the draw. Why not just make it simple and have everyone play each other once in the first 9 rounds including a bye for each team, then do that again from rounds 10-18 but play at the opposite venue, then have two rounds when three teams have a bye before the bottom three teams from the year before have a bye each in the last three rounds.

The principle of the draw is right in that over two years you play each team 5 times, its just the order that makes no sense.

I was wondering the same thing. Years ago I thought that there was set formula for the draw based on the ladder postions the previous year.

Its crazy that the Roosters have had 2 byes and the Eagles and the Bays none to date. We'll end up needing to put a % won column on the ladder to work out the adjusted positions the way we are going.

Can anyone close to the SANFL shed some light on this?

I think the same thing happened to Port a couple of years back with trips to Noarlunga five rounds apart. Can't speak for the barbeque though :)

Just on that, this kind of "Match Ratio" format was tried in the early days of nine teams.

Might be wrong but I think the (then) redundant "premiership points" column was retained, though that may have just been the newspaper and not the Budget.

IMO, this wasn't a bad system, though too many people couldn't get their heads around it, so it was scrapped.

Personally these days, I tend to ignore the premiership points and just look the losses and draws.

Well with the SANFL stating each team will play each other 5 time over two years, and clubs making request of fixtures i.e. Don't crash with the Crows/Power, play x amount of Sat/Sun games, preference for playing "traditional" rivals on certain dates, and fitting around TV commitments well the draw becomes slightly more complicated than it used to be.

The draw is crap and whoever came up with North's fixtures needs to be shot. 2 byes in the first 8 rounds followed by a mandatory week off for the state game??? As others have mentioned though, the only saving grace is that we will get some quality players back after shocking run with injuries.

The other quite bizzare fact is that despite 2 byes and back to back losses in our last 2 games we are still sitting in 5th spot. Other than Norwood finding some form, I think the top 5 is set now with the only interest as to what order the teams will finish from spots 2 to 5.

The Eagles don't get a bye to round 11 then have 2 in the last 6 rounds.

After the AFL draw has been settled, the SANFL try to fit in their schedule with all the commitments of Fri/Sat/Sun and TV games, our draw then goes to all GM's in the SANFL for clubs approval, if clubs are not happy with the draw, they can ask the SANFL to re-arrange the schedule so that all clubs are happy with the arrangement.

Its plain to see that North are happy with the way things have worked out for them this season, otherweise they would have complained to the SANFL.

Then again does the SANFL listen to their member clubs.

Sometimes I wonder!!!

All well and good if they awarded a Premiership only every two years.

The draw is a joke. As mentioned Port @ Noarlunga twice in 5 weeks last year and the Eags V West have played twice already this year.

The SANFL should do the programming and the clubs get what they get. If the SANFL bow to the pressure of clubs on who/where/when they play there will be no consistency at all.

(The draw against Norwood was the only match I missed for the year due to a wedding, I caught the draw against South though)
