NORTH Adelaide’s under-18 coach Greg Edwards has defected to the Port Adelaide Magpies after being made the club’s new chief executive on Monday.

Edwards beat 40 other applicants - including one from Scotland - for the top job and starts at Alberton on August 31.

Edwards played more than 100 games for Central District in the 1980s and is the father of Richmond AFL footballer Shane.

He will bring 15 years of commercial and managerial experience in the wine industry to his new role with the Magpies.

``We had a big selection to choose from and it was very difficult between three of them,’’ Port Adelaide Magpies chairman Bruce McFarlane said.

McFarlane said it was Edwards’ ``football knowledge’’ that got him the job.

``He is a clear thinker and very passionate,’’ he said.

Edwards is currently overseas and unavailable for comment.

As for the applicant from Scotland, McFarlane said the person did not make it to the second round of selection and had no experience in the football industry.

MAGPIES ANNOUNCE NEW CEO
On behalf of the Board I am pleased to confirm the appointment of Greg Edwards as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club. Greg will commence with the Club on Monday, August 31.

Greg combines over 15 years of commercial and managerial experience in the wine industry with an excellent football background with the Central District Football Club and more recently, North Adelaide Football Club.

Greg played over 100 games for Central District through the 1980s and still holds the record for most goals in a season with 104 goals in 1982.

He has been directly involved with the North Adelaide Football Club for the last 5 years and has this year been the Head Coach of their U18 team, with tomorrow being his last game as coach.

Greg’s son Shane is currently playing in the AFL with Richmond.

Greg is exceptionally passionate about football and is really looking forward to leading the Magpies into season 2010 and beyond.

- PAMFC Chairman Bruce McFarlane

Interesting to note that their was an application submitted for the position from Scotland, maybe JAS has changed her allegiances in an attempt to get to Australia !!

Maybe he is doing it to get the administrative experience under his belt with a long term view to taking over from Kris Grant at Central, Greg's orignal club, when the Granty eventually decides to give it away at Elizabeth ?

Is the Centrals job bigger and better than Ports? :?

I think most Dog fans will disown him after a stint at the PAMFC

Yes, like -Lockwood, Surjan, (Hodges, the Bonds, Wanganeen, Carter etc from Salisbury) Alan Stewart, Stewey Cochrane, Alistair Clarkson (depending on who the real Port is) ;)
But we got Dessy Drogemuller!

I didn't include him, as he came via the country league. But yep, you're right. To be fair Meggsy, using the same logic, came via North.

They only wanted a non-Port person in the hope they'd be less likely to end up being poached by the Power.

IT looks the toughest job in SA football.

Saving the Port Adelaide Magpies, one of the most famous football clubs in the land, from extinction.

But newly appointed chief executive Greg Edwards refuses to see it that way.

He started his new job on Monday the day after the Magpies lost to lowly South Adelaide with surprising optimism.

``No doubt it’s a massive challenge,’’ he said.

``When you apply for a job, you do it because you think you can add value to it.

``But it won’t just be my actions that will see the club move forward, it will be everyone the new coach, the staff, the board and the players.

``And success is ahead of us.’’

Edwards, who played about 100 League and Reserves games for Central District in the 1980s, has been involved in the game from amateur to AFL level.

Last year he worked in recruiting and opposition analysis for Richmond where his son Shane plays.

Last month he quit his job as commercial director of wine packaging company Vinocor, and as North Adelaide’s under-18 coach, to join the black and white army at Alberton.

``I saw the job advertised and I was thinking about applying.

``Then I spoke to Glenn Elliott (North Adelaide CEO) who supported me. He’d known I’d been interested in getting involved in the footy industry for a while.’’

He had coffee with outgoing Magpies boss Matthew Richardson, applied for the job, and a month later was appointed.

Edwards said he had some ``off-field revenue raising’’ ideas, which he would discuss with the board in coming weeks, to help wipe out the club’s $2 million debt.

He said a key was ensuring the success of its major asset, the Prince of Wales Hotel, although his ideas were ``nothing radical’’, and all about ``hard work’’.

``I had a very good view of where the finances sit and there are issues, I’m well aware of that.

``Certain things are tight but the challenges are workable there is a way out.’’

One of his first jobs is to find a replacement for outgoing coach Tim Ginever.

``I’m heading that up and we’ve got a sub-committee working on it.

``We advertised last week and we do have a list of people we’re going to talk to.’’
