Huge Crowd at Freo Oval - 7000+

Postby Thunder_Egan » Tue Jun 06, 2006 12:00 am

As fans of state league football, I thought you guys would love to see the crowd we got for our Traditional Foundation Day Derby.

The biggest crowd we have seen at Freo Oval for at least a decade.

Don't have an official crowd yet...but will respond when I do.

Was fabulous to be a part of a large crowd...I now know how great SANFL footy would be with these crowds consistently.

Estimations have been from 7-12,000...what sort of crowd do you guys reckon are there?

My in-laws usually go and they said that the derby crowds really dropped off for a while, so it's good to see them back. Mind you considering where Easts are at the moment I am surprised by the size of the crowd.
And BTW Go the Mighty Doggies (157 pts :D )

I know we do "brag" a bit about our crowds, but when something like this appears in other leagues, it's great to see as well.

I say around 9,000 as this is the same oval which hosted the state game in 2003 and there was 6,345 then, so I'd try and guess from that.

Yeah I posted on austadiums that I thought there was 9-10,000 here...with one bulldog claiming that it was the largest crowd he had seen at Fremantle Oval since 1986.

To put this in perspective our Finals at Subiaco Oval battled to get 5000 - even for Double Headers.

Foundation Day Derby, 22c, Gerovich Statue being unveiled at Fremantle Oval by the Premier of Western Australia.

Reasonable promotion.

I would still like to get people in South Australia's estimation on the crowd, the official crowd has not been announced yet.

How can we estimate if we wernt there? From the photo 6000. Logically 4-5 thousand. From what uv said 9000. Not a clue.

Thanks mate, just wanted to gauge the beliefs of those who have seen the photos...it is a bit deceptive.

As you guys see large crowds all the time, just wanted to see what those in SA would gauge this crowd as.

Here is the $300,000 Statue that was jointly funded by the City of Fremantle/State Government/Sth Fremantle/Fremantle Dockers/West Coast Eagles and donations by the General Public.

Crowds are an estimate only...9000 by The West Australian

If its an estimate i sincerely doubt it was 9000. U just don't get an increase from 1500-9000 for such a mismatch. The game i went to at joondalup was overestimated in terms of crowd size by the paper. i would say 6-7 thousand

East Fremantle are crap at the moment so I can't see that many people
turning out to see them, even against South.
Final score by the way,South 35.13.223 East 9.12.66.

For a game to have such a big turnout, that scoreline is simply amazing.

On the WAFL website even 42 possessions to Woewodin didn't make much of a difference for Easts.

It seems that everyone is doubting the size of this crowd(including me) but
I think we should be a bit more positive about crowds @ WAFL games.
Some of the crowds in the past 5-10 years have dipped below 1000 so I
think any upturn in this is positive and should be encouraged.
Go West Perth!

Shame about the result. Everyone was talking about the Souths V Subi game a couple of weeks ago and how it was a better standard than a few AFL games that weekend. It's all about media exposure.

There's been a few SANFL games in recent times that have been as good as and less sanitised than the national 'product'. It's a shame that footy fans aren't attending more local games.

This is a Foundation Day Derby and a fine day, thus a large crowd...this crowd has traditionally been 5000 + every year and WAFL Crowds have increased 11% this year.

8129 the official Crowd at Freo Oval.
6447 the official Crowd for the Perth Derby at Arena Joondalup.
