I made reference to them using that name in another topic and got shot down by a bunch of Port supporters basicaly saying using that name or similar would have done more damage than good. I personaly believe it's a fantastic idea. The only way out for the Power is to unite the support of the SA public and there not going to do that by keeping the name Port Adelaide.

I wonder how many Port supporters on this forum would support a club known as "Southern Power". I certainly wouldn't, i don't know of any others who would either.

Lose all the existing Port supporters and hope there's 40,000+ football people in this state who don't barrack for the Crows or an existing other AFL side to replace them? Yes, I'm sure the SANFL and the AFL want to take that risk on top of everything else right now.

You won't get anywhere being everyone's second team - just ask Woodville or Fitzroy.

If it was such a great idea i am sure at least one SANFL club over the last 12 months would have raised the idea. It's not as though they have been afraid to speak out about the Power's problems.

Why not ? Of course I would suggest that you maintain the heritage of Port Adelaide by keeping the black and white colours. Call yourselves the Power as well that's all good. But by calling youself Southern Power it goes to show that you are trying to represent SA not just Port Adelaide. Any true Port supporter should rightfuly know that and support them none the less. I would suggest any that wouldn't aren't true Port supprters at all.

Why not? Because they're no longer Port Adelaide, its as simple as that really.

Your base would remain at Alberton and you maintain black and white. That way you are respecting the heritage but also capturing neutral support. You can't expect to sign up 40,000 Port Adelaide members but you could go along way to that goal by representing our proud state SA.

If you asked on a Port Adelaide forum this question (either Big Footy or TPFP), i think your proposal would be rejected, i'd expect less than 5% would say they'd support the newly named club. I've seen this type of thing discussed on these forums and the response is emphatically in the negative.

I agree, but they've missed their opportunity to make it work straight up. Unfortunately it will be a generation of supporters who have to stop the continued hatred of Port before that could even think of being viable.

As long as you've got Tredrea, Brogan and Cornes on deck, and Willams, Primus, Kingsley et al behind the scenes, it will be Port, even if they were to name it the Ethelton Emus.

Anyway you badge it, it's still Port.

I think if you and others think that naming Port the Southern Power or whatever, that suddenly the supporters of other clubs will flock to sign up for them, then you'd be sadly mistaken.

Football supporters and administrators have long memories - or have we forgotten the going-s on of the past week?

If by 'neutral support' you mean the people who didn't really follow the SANFL pre-AFL, and therefore had no strong allegiance to any club, then the fact that they are Port Adelaide shouldn't matter. These people didn't follow a team that was beaten by Port all the time, didn't develop the 'respect for them but hate them' attitude. If these people are looking for an AFL team and are turned off the Crows for whatever reason (can't get tickets, chardonnay image etc), it wouldn't matter who the alternative is because they have no baggage to carry around.

You're not respecting the heritage if you drop "Port" out of the name! Why not just call them Crows V2 Power?

Further, you can't call them Adelaide Power because the Crows won't let them copy their name and fair enough too

So then you have to pick a geographic region which won't work either. If you use "Southern" then what about the Crows supporters who live down south and the Port supporters who live up North?

As I have said on here before, ask the NMFC how successful it is to drop your existing name in an attempt to win wider support. And, as many on here keep telling us, an AFL club does not represent a state.

Look, to be fair, it's a great idea so long as you don't spend more than 5 minutes thinking about it. It's a good throw-away line at a BBQ.

Couldn't agree more Hondo. Bulldogs are the same. If they've recruited one supporter outside their normal Footscray supporter base I'd be very surprised. What Brayshaw decided to do (and rightly so i might add) is go "back to roots" and rally the existing supporters into members. Changing Ports name will further distance themselves from their heritage. I know several people who are Magpies fans who can't stand the Power. Those people (in my opinion) should be studied by the Power as to why they've distanced themselves from supporting and being a member of the AFL brother.
