Dont give up Port Adelaide members!

I had some time to have a chat with a mate at work today who is a keen Port Adelaide Magpies Member and Port Power Member who came across as not very happy and quite upset about the outcome of the meeting last night and the subsequent ruling of the SANFL commission.

It is a setback for the PAFC, yet its not by any means the final round yet for the club despite the dire predictions that have been made in the media.

In the late 1980's I remember only to well what it was like to as a kid be barracking for South Adelaide when the club came to a financial meltdown and had to have the SANFL guarantee the players wages until the end of the year when it was widely tipped that a South - Sturt merger would take place. I remember only to well a minority of people that barracked for Sturt gloating about how the new side would be double blue, called Sturt and based at Unley and so on. I also remember that we called an emergency meeting of the club and were able to raise memberships and finance to get the club out of its problems and it went on to lead to South getting its proposal together to make the move from St Marys down to Noarlunga where we have been able to make the club a profitable one ever since.

Plenty of people are suggesting that Port Magpies supporters have left the club and are now with the Port Power club, I suspect that if you speak to some of those people you will find that their passion for the Magpies is still as strong as ever.

Tim Ginever is getting together a rally for the club, lets all get behind what he is trying to do and lets see some funds flow into the club and just like South - Sturt - North, lets see Port make a comeback and become a cashed up side. Ideally all it would take is for the debts owing on the Prince of Wales to be retired and then the club would have the noose removed. If enough of us get behind the club and support it to raise these funds I am very sure things can and will turn around for Port.

So please dont give up just yet, its only round 1, not the match...

It is not a set-back at all. It is exactly the kick up the arse that we need to wake up to the fact that we don't actually have a god-given right to exist simply because we are Port Adelaide.

Now is the time to mobilise the latent supported base. Any attempts to do it prior to today's ruling were destined to fail as they would have received no support from the club as those in charge had been conned by the best bit of spin since Old Trafford in 1993.

I signed up today with my usual Portonian package, and one for my son. So did 230+ others.

Presumably those 230 didn't want to see their hard-earned going to the bastard-spawn either.

What a super SUPER post mate, congratulations.

As I posted somewhere else, Port have lost a few battles over the years but they've never lost a war ... IT won't be easy but worthwhile things never are and Im very confident your mob can get through this.

Congrats again on your outlook mate!

Agree with CP. Great post pipers. Exactly the attitude that will ensure the survival of the Magpies.

Well done pipers, that's the best post seen by anyone on this subject bar none. For any post I've seen anywhere from any Port fan about us laying down 20 years ago; they are doing the exact same thing now but worse. Not everyone however, as your post testifies.

I've always enjoyed your posts and respect your opinion pipers, and my stance is vindicated. :ymapplause:

That is cruel for your son. I emailed the club today asking about their two year membership package for $88. I asked if I sign up for two years 2010 & 2011 and worst case that they do not compete in 2011, do I get my money back or do I must I join the line up of unsecured creditors hoping for perhaps 35 cents in the dollar back?

Awaiting a reply

And people wonder why Eagles supporters are held up for ridicule on here. Apologies to the decent ones like Aerie, Columbo and Spelly but gee that post says more about you than pipers or the PAMFC.

I know Port are feeling pretty bitter at the moment and blaming the SANFL clubs, but if they went to the other clubs cap in hand asking for other ideas and backing that doesn't involve merger with an AFL club, they'll get a hearing.

Despite their assertion that the rest of the league wants them gone out of spite, it is just not true.

eddie eagle the numpty aside, this is a brilliant thread.
I am one that has been in the PAMFC wilderness (due to being overseas), but now I'm back, keener and more passionate about the Magpies than ever.

I'll be in for the Portonian membership and a junior membership for my 10 week old son. I couldn't think of anything worse than him growing up without having witnessed the (once) Mighty Magpies.

Hopefully enough of us come out of the woodwork so my young fella gets to see Port Adelaide win a flag like I did many, many times as a kid.

"Call to have Port Adelaide Football Club heritage listed"

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl ... 5828981777

The Headline nearly made me fall of my chair, but it really is an article about how some locals have acknowledged that it is up to them now.

This is what the Sturt, North, South Adel and Eagles supporters have been implying all along.
You can't wait for truck loads of money to fall into your lap from a fairy tale White Knight.
Port Magpies need to find those barrackers and make them financial supporters, and get them to put their money where their hearts used to be.

I had to laugh at the comment " If we lose the Port Adelaide Magpies we might as well put a closed sign on all of Port Adelaide - tourism, business, you name it." :?

When John Martins went by the wayside, supposedly that was going to be the end of the world.

I really dont think the membership is the problem. The club, to my recollection, has always been in the top few in memberships over the past 3-4 years. We'll need 30,000 members to stay afloat going by some of the figures stated which would be more than just about every other club combined and wouldnt be sustainable. More sponsors and finding ways to cut expenditure is what it will come down to. Getting rid of the POW would be a start.

So they want to be a heritage listed tourist attraction as well? FFS no wonder their club is in the position it is?

There is definitely a element of spite in dealing with Port Adelaide. You see it on this forum with fans, how can it not be there in the background among official of 'some' clubs. Whether it influenced the decision is a different question, but I reckon if a club was 50/50 on the proposal then it would have swung them against.

It appears the clubs and SANFL rejected the proposal because they thought the numbers didnt stack up. Who knows ..... but I see no reason to beleive the SANFL club accountants over the Power and Magpies.

Lets assume that it was finances only that was the issue, then you would expect that if the magpies dig themselves out of the pooh and the power do the dsame that other clubs would have no objection to a 'similar' merger down the track ?

If the answer is no then clubs and the SANFL have lied in saying the financials of the model were the reason for saying no.
