Motlop's magic inspires Roosters

A DANIEL Motlop-inspired North Adelaide pulled off a remarkable escape act to condemn Sturt to also-ran status this season with a 41-point win at Adelaide Oval last night.
After being outplayed and trailing by 33 points at the main break, the rampaging Roosters blasted 15.12 to just 4.4 in an imposing performance that smacked of pure class.
The amazing Motlop conjured a brilliant sleight-of-hand - and foot - performance in the third quarter that made a mockery of human movement.
After just seven unremarkable disposals in the first half, Motlop moved into another sphere to picked up eight kicks, take three classy marks, give out one handball that resulted in a goal to Matthew Campbell and kick 4.2 off his own boot in about 30 minutes. It was simply magical.
He rotated from the goalsquare to the midfield in the second half to menace the Blues with bursts of weaving turns and blissful skills to pick up one more goal to end with 5.5 for the night in a gamebreaking display.
His mate, Campbell, joined Motlop on centre stage with four goals of his own - three in that devastating third quarter - as North careered away to prove it has a number of rabbits to pull out of its hat. Regularly beaten to the ball and sloppy with its forward entries early, North stamped its authority immediately after half-time.
With Motlop and Campbell in overdrive, the Roosters added 5.2 to nothing in the opening 10 minutes of the term with 35 disposals to Sturt's humble 10 touches in that time.
Dean Howard made his presence felt, Scott Bamford stepped up a gear, Shane Schubert and ever-reliable Luke Ivens controlled the defence and Heath Younie began to work into the game.
It was a reversal of the opening half when Sturt had the upper hand.
This contest was the Blues' last chance to stay in touch with the final five and it played accordingly.
Sturt skipper Ben Nelson (hamstring) withdrew before the game, leaving the Blues undermanned in body strength but Jade Sheedy, Andrew Whiteman, Tim Weatherald, Ben Colreavy and half-back Luke Jarjoura played with purpose and guts.
Lightweight wingman Michael Bratton was sensational in the first term with nine disposals and he had Leigh Ryswyk shifted. However, Bratton found it infinitely more difficult on Bamford.
Colreavy (3.3) was relentless but made too many mistakes. Craig Taylor, Angus Kurtze and Will Paley (4.0) proved coach Brenton Phillips has something to work on next year but Sturt did not have the class to match the running North brigade.
