hey mate, im living in NYC atm and play football for the New York Magpies....DC has a team based in baltimore called the Baltimore/Washington Eagles. We were just down that way a few weeks ago playing against philly and the eagles. You should look them up on the netif your keen to have a kick or see it live.

anyway, to answer your question, teams have 'nicknames' like your sports teams do...the Sturt Double Blues are called that due to their clubrooms and home ground oval located at the corner of oxford and cambridge terraces...these two street names are universities in england and their colours are light and dark blue, hence, double blue...The name Sturt was given due to the location of the area, Sturt council (municipal) area. Someone else might correct me on that last point however as im not 100% certain..

the other teams

Centrals Bulldogs
Port Magpies
North Adelaide Roosters
Norwood Redlegs
Glenelg Tigers
South Panthers
Woodville/West Torrens Eagles
West Adelaide Bloods (logo is a dog/hound)
and of course, Sturt Double Blues

A supporter from each team will be able to tell you more about their team.

Welcome and keep up the interest in our great sport and tell your friends and family.

also, check ou usfooty.com and nyfooty.com for more on footy in the USA.

G'day GB82

My team the Glenelg Tigers are also known as the Bays because they are based in the Holdfast Bay area of Adelaide.

We are known as the Bays to the locals as well as the Tigers, Tigers because our colours are Black and Gold, a la the Cincinatti Bengals.

We are one of the younger clubs only been in the comp since 1921.

Be warned if you support the Port MAgpies you may cop some abuse ion this site as Port supporters aren't that well liked. They are not so well liked becasue of the success Port have had but also because they aren't the most intellegent people walking this planet, definately from the lower branches of the evolutionary tree.

Stick with them if you want but if you catch up with Jimmy he can tell you more, yeah I know Washington and NY are bloody big and it is not like you are neighbours.

Congratulations on following what we all believe to be the best sport in the world, welcome to the Australian Football family

Norwood are known as "The Redlegs" because they have always worn red socks in their uniform. For a short time from the late 1950 to the early 1960s the (then) Coach Alan Killigrew wanted them known as the Demons and they wore Melbourne style jumpers.

Hey goalieboy82, welcome aboard.

Why did Centrals choose "Bulldogs"? Elizabeth was a new town at the time the CDFC was born, and a lot of Brits were shipping in to settle in South Australia. So with that in mind, they went with the Bulldogs and the colours quoted above. Although, the colours were first mooted by the man who made the club happen.

CDFC is the youngest club in the league, formed in 1959 to play five seasons of B-Grade football before entering League level in '64. They're still considered a pommy club, followed by vocal, soccer-style supporters.

And the very first patrons of Central District in 1959 were the Footscray Football Club (VFL). That may have had something to do with the colours.

yep remember reading about SANFL history at school somewhere, Footscray visited the area to promote footy and donated the clubs uniform for the first season.

The name Central District came from the region the clubs area covers, the Central Agricultural District. It was from a carnival involving local clubs from this area that the idea for the league club was born.

Westies have had a few nicknames the Bloods is from the Blood N Tars nickname from the 1950's. Westies have also been called the Bottletops after a local beer in saouth Australia and also the Wolves. Our current logo is that of a wolf but we keep the bloods as our nickname.
