Apologies if this has been covered before - but is the 50 Metre line at the Bay more like a 45 Metre line?

At Princes Park they used to measure it from the fence rather than the goal line, but the best one I ever saw was at the Western Oval when it was first introduced, they just painted a straight line, 50 metres straight in front but more like 75 metres at the boundary.....
Aaaah, the good old days of suburban VFL footy, Western Oval, Moorabbin, Vic Park, Windy Hill.....

Can anyone explain the logic of having a 47 metre line instead of 50? I mean if it has to cross over the square then so be it! Surely its not out of embarassment at the size of the oval?

If it's called a 50m line it should be exactly that, 50 meters, not 47 or 44. If it has to cross into the centre square so be it, just make it 50m

Geezus Ian, that's crazy talk, next you'll want the umpires giving 25 metre penaties of 25 metres!

Don't be stupid, why would any one want that

Personally I like the anticipation of wondering whether you are going to get a 20 or 30 metre penalty

Or a 66 metre one if you're a Sturt supporter at the moment...

A bit OT I know but the 25m penalty in todays game is more a hindrance than a help unless you are having a shot at goal, I noticed a few times when Glenelg rec'd one it just stopped the flow of the game and allowed CD to set their zone up. We would have been better off without it.

Agreed. It's a penalty to the team with the ball more often than not.
The interpretation of the advantage rule on Saturday was rubbish too.

Yep 25 metre should be 50m. Although I would stipulate that they aren't given for soft stuff as they have been. Sorry off track.

Whilst on the size of Ovals, did anyone catch Michael Maney's comment on the ABC Broadcast last weekend just before the first bounce? He said something along the lines of the following in that the Eagles would feel right at home on the Unley Oval as it was the same size / dimensions as Woodville!
He obviously has no idea of oval size comparisons if he thinks that!
