Under 18's playing Reserves in 2010

There seem to be some confusion about guys born in 1992 playing Reserves this year. I was under the impression that they were unable to do so unless they had played league footy or had played a certain number of games in the two's last year. I have heard on the grapevine that some clubs are playing them in their reserves side anyway but was not sure if there was any truth to that.

Can anyone generate a list of those born in 1992 that have played reserves this year (or at least at their club) and how they have qualified to do so?? Would make for interesting reading.

Fine, I'll answer my oen question then.....Comparing the SANFL U/18 Academy list with only a couple of team lists on the SANFL website it seems that about half of the clubs are playing some guys up and others are not. I am sure I have missed some others, but if there are at least 12 playing reserves then that kind of goes against one of the reasons for switching to the under 18 comp which was to have all of the best kids that age play against each other?

The ones I could find so far are:

J.Schiller - CDFC
J.Polec - WWT
M.Grigg - NWD
N.Batley - WWT
J.Wittwer - CDFC
J.Waldhuter - CDFC
D.Gorringe - NWD
A.Carter - SAFC
B.Smith - WWT
M.Ialeggiou - NWD
S.Gray - PAM
S.Lycett - PAM

Thoughts anyone?

In the case of Gorringe and Grigg both played league last year so under the rules they can play reserves. Ialeggiou played league in the opening rounds so I'm not sure if that perhaps allows him to play.

In the case of some of the others I know some clubs have been low on numbers. We played an under 18 ruckman (Levicki) a few weeks ago as we had four ruckman out for various reasons so were given permission to play an underage ruckman. I'd say the others could have similar reasons behind them.

Brodie Smith and Jared Polec both played League last year IIRC, Nathan Batley played 2's.

This year Polec and Batley played the first 2's game but have been in 18's since, Brodie Smith played 2's monday after returning from AIS Squad.

plus
Levcki - NWD
C.Hay - NAFC

Takes it to at least 14 plus a couple playing league (Solly at Port for example)

Be interesting to see how many of the State Under 18 squad have played exclusively in the Under 18 comp as was initially proposed. It would appear there wont be many.

About 16 out of 36 (give or take one or two) of the State Under 18 squad have played league or reserves in 2010. So your estimation of not many is wrong I would suggest.

I think the rule is that if you played 5 or more league or reserves games last year you could play above U18s this year without 'special dispensation'.

Applying this rule across the list it would come out to something like 11 out of 36 went against the spirit of the rule (or to be precise their club sought and were granted special dispensation due to extenuating circumstances).

While these numbers (11 out of 36 or about 30%) are not ideal they are far from your assertion that "there won't be many" who stuck to the spirit of the rule. Fact is 70% did.

The facts ruin a good story sometimes don't they?

I can answer that, he is going very well. Has been the U18s most consistant performer this season. Wins alot of ball at half back, has some improving to do with his skills, but is going really well.

Good stuff, thanks for that. Plays school footy & hangs around here a bit with my eldest, real nice bloke.
Parents are insufferable Port fanatics, used to have to boot them out the house when the subject of footy came up.

I was actually thinking "there wont be too many" in the team of 22 or so that play in the first game, rather than the extended squad, so on that basis yes the facts did get in the way of that story. I am sure some of the remaining squad members have been playing College footy in preference to the Under 18 Comp which would also adjust your figure too.

I am surprised that there have already been 11 examples in in the first 5 rounds of "extenuating circumstances". Are SANFL clubs seriously that short of senior players? Did some clubs do such a poor job of planning for the season that they found themselves short of senior age players by Round 1 or 2 and required topping up with under 18 players? Perhaps I am too cynical, but I would have thought responsible list management would see an SANFL club enter the season with closer to 60 senior layers on their list rather than 40.

If a club kept 30 players who played league in '09 and added 12 from their '09 Under 18's, recruited just 5 new players to the club, they would only need 3 players who played exclusively reserves football the year before to run a list of 50. Maybe I am too far away from the realities of running a club, but the numbers seem to stack up to me.

If he makes the final cut this week and plays reserves, my nephew Jake Hazeal at Central will be one, he's played in the 18's for the Dogs so far this year...

I reckon Caleb Edmead who has played reserves for Centrals in the past couple of weeks has played 18s this year. He is just a friend of the family

Yeah, he has Thiele, he started the season in the 18's and played some good footy under Grant Coffee, despite Central's side copping a couple of heavy losses along the way. Caleb made his reserves debut for the Doggies against the Tigers at the Bay a few weeks ago and has been very impressive in his 2 or 3 seconds games since.

Is a very hard working, nippy little on-baller or half forward. Uses the ball well and tackles ferociously for a little fella. Certainly a quality footballer and one I wouldn't be suprised to see be added to the State Under 18's squad should he keep playing some good footy in the 2's.
