Lots of comments across threads about the appaling umpiring witnessed this year.......I have to say, with one individual exception, I haven't had a problem with it.

While that individual exception was responsible for some very ordinary decisions at both Glenelg and Alberton, he was dropped from the league panel.

I've even been to a couple of games where it was part way through the third quarter before I noticed Rowston was umpiring.

If you don't notice them, they're doing an OK job.

I thought yesterday @ Prospect was the best I've seen this year, not perfect (you'll never get that) but not bad at all.

No dramas with the umpiring here either. They aren't perfect and at times I think WTFWTF but generally they are pretty good. They make no more mistakes than the players do.

My minor gripe is that they are umpiring more like the AFL interpretations this year, so at times blokes get rewarded for hanging back and calling for taxi, i.e. holding the ball against the bloke who has made the effort to get to the pill first.

Generally they reward the blokes who get first to the footy. I reckon anyone who complains about umpiring after a match should have a good hard think about where there team was in terms of getting first to the pill if they think they have been hard done by. If you still don't think that, go and do a level one or two umpres course as then you'll have a better undersanding of the laws of this game then you might be able to understand why your team has "apparently" been hard done by.

Certainly from a Glenelg perspective no way can we attribute our losses, or even the size of our losses to the umpires.

One good reason for that........ Your Club gets looked after every week I have had to watch them for the past 25 years.

The umpires have been horrible again this year. And, after watching the tape of the Bays v Hybrids yesterday, nothing has changed - they were terrible and the Bays got well and truly looked after. Surprise, Surprise.

While I thought yesterday many of the Eagles fans were over the top in their disgust of the umpires .
It was at times frustrating watching three umpires with three different interpretations .
Of course this was not the reason the Eagles lost .

I reckon I noticed a couple missed for us yesterday (as Rooster fans probably did for their mob), in particular holding the ball calls and a couple of unpaid marks, but by and large I didn't think the umpiring was that bad for the day

umpiring overall is pretty good & they are umpiring to what they've been instructed to albeit paying very soft free kicks however they are paying them for both teams & to the man in front, i've seen plenty of games this year & there is only 1 umpire which i made a post of who isn't up to it (yet), deboy is another but he seems to be improving a bit

People around me on the outer were going off at the umps. Maybe Fester was calming everyone down near where you were sitting?

A whisper I heard a few weeks ago was that SANFL umpires have been asked to make decisions more akin to AFL decision making, as the AFL wants umpires to have a career path for umpires (and develop them thus) in a way that AFL/SANFL umpiring promotes consistency with its interpretations through the feeder levels.

I've always been amused by this term. I've always wondered what a "soft" free kick is. Surely by the wording of the rules, something is either a free kick or it's not. Nowhere have I ever read a rule with varying degrees of hardness written into it.

A few Eagles supporters behind me spent most of the day abusing Umpire Day.
"Day you're useless", "Day, the Bounday Ump could do better than you", "Day you're a disgrace"

The reason for my chuckle....
ex GFC player Aaron Day was making his league debut yesterday for the Eagles, and I was hoping he didn't think the abuse was directed at him.

I was talking to a very well known SANFL football identity who doesn't support either North or Norwood, and he also commented the umpires appeared to be confused by the holding the ball rule.

I think it's been noticably poorer this season.

And that inconsistency is the very thing that upsets and frustrates spectators,players and coaches. And it changes from week to week-with no accountability from the umpiring department to the clubs

I did not have a problem with them yesterday (Sturt v South).

Good effort from South Aussie umpire Sam Hay...

He officiated in the West v Port game Friday night at Richmond, then got the late call up to AFL ranks today for the Port v Carlton game at AAMI...

There will always be elements of the crowd who are disatisfied with decisions here and there. Where the umpiring fraternity should be concerned is when you have a mass of people who take the time to abuse the refs on mass as they leave for half time or full time, as we saw at Unley Oval on Saturday.

While its easy to dismiss fans as just sore losers, here you had an instance where the fans of the winning team felt it necessary to join as a group and give the umps some stick. Logic would say that if your team won, you wouldn't bother complaining, unless of course, you genuinely felt some afront at the performance of the umps.

This was one of those instances.

The umpiring was poor.

I won't even bother bringing up the week to week crap Chambers puts up with. Unfortunately we all know that top full forwards, be they in the SANFL or AFL, will not get any help from the refs.
