SANFL players on the 'Roo'dar

Read with interest this morning Mark Ricciuto's article in 'Roo's View' on the back page of the Advertiser's Footy Liftout...

He makes mention that with somewhat of a precedent set on mature age recruits in the AFL this year, his point that the SANFL can expect to be "pilfered" of talent is both a worrying one and reasonably accurate one would suggest. It was certainly an interesting article and he made some very valid points.

The likes of Fremantle's Michael Barlow and Alex Silvagni and of course the big 'Pods', James Podsiadly at Geelong proving players do not have to be under 20 years of age to make it at AFL level these days, I guess is something that we as SANFL fans have to consider the possible effect it will have on our competiton.

With the Gold Coast coming into the AFL next year, having already taken the likes of Michael Coad and Roland AhChee for their debut season in the VFL this year, then of course Greater Western Sydney entering the national comp in 2012, are we going to see more mid to late 20's players gone from the SANFL?

He collates a list with about 20 players (see below) that, in his opinion (and no doubt the opinions of many others, including some of us) are capable of making it on an AFL list despite not being teenagers and in some instances, have already had a shot on an AFL list with either rookie listings or training opportunites.

Here is that list of players he mentioned that should be on the radar of AFL clubs as well as a couple of comments he has on each them:

Mark Ricciuto in the Advertiser wrote:
ON THE RADAR:

Kerian McGuinness: 26 (Norwood) - The former Western Bulldog is one of the best tall, rebounding defenders in the SANFL. At 26, could play a valuable back half role.

Paul Puopolo: 22 (Norwood) – A bit like Crow Graham Johncock. Quick, can run from defence and good one-on-one.

Daniel Caire: 22 (West Adelaide) – Lightning-quick small backmen/midfielder who is composed and has good skills.

Jonathon Beech: 19 (West Adelaide) - Riverland boy is a ball manet and possesses a great work ethic.

Roury Kirkby: 24 (Glenelg) – Former Hawks/ Tiger rookie is one of the SANFL’s best lead-up forwards and set shots for goal.

Kane Tenace: 24 (Glenelg) - Geelong’s No. 7 2003 draft pick has enough talent to make it at another club.

Brayden O’Hara: 22 (Central District) – Wingman reminds me of Stuart Dew and a read-made AFL player.

Andrew Hayes: 24 (Central District) – Super athlete who can play anywhere in defence.

Ian Callinan: 27 (Central District) – Nippy midfielder/small forward who has a great eye for goal.

Tristian Gum: 26 (Sturt) – Highly-skilled half-forward/on baller who is good overhead and knows where the goals are.

Charlie Sharples: 21 (Sturt) – Offers brilliant goalkicking and strong defensive pressure inside-50.

Adam Cockshell: 23 (South) Former Power rookie ruckman.forward has improved considerably and deserves another shot.

OTHERS: Andrew Horne (South), Nick Duigan (Norwood), Scott Bricknell (West), Steve Summerton (Port), Terry Milera (Port), Leigh Treeby (WWT), Stuart Hill (WWT) and former basketballer Peter Hoban (WWT).

Very interesting times ahead for the SANFL and hopefully if it does eventuate that our great competition does have some of these star players recruited to the new clubs or into the AFL in general, I, for one, hope that the standard doesn't drop because the clubs at SANFL level still have talent coming through.

Sharples???

Is he for real? How many times would 'Roo' have seen him play?

Will be lucky to hold his spot in Sturt's league team...

I'd have a better understanding if the intricacies of tapestry than Riccuito would of SANFL players.

At first CC, I must agree with you about Charlie Sharples...

But let's not forget that only a couple of seasons ago, the lad was playing State football for SA and was being looked at by some AFL clubs and the NT Thunder.

I agree that he has struggles recently to hold his spot in the Sturt league side, but I think he would still be looked at by AFL clubs because they know what Charlie is capable of.

I would suggest that 'Roo' would have done some research on these players before writing the article, be it look at some tapes of the players he mentioned, go to some SANFL games live, speak to the SANFL journalists at both the Messenger and Advertiser and of course some of his own thoughts and opinions.

So you don't agree with ANY or just a FEW of the players Roo has mentioned there Wedgie, including one who used to play for your beloved Geelong?

Fair points. I've seen him do some magical stuff but it's all too inconsistent for me to ever believe he'd find himself at an AFL club. Gum on the other hand would not be a bad pick up. Prove me wrong Charlie! I truly hope you kick 5 against the Magpies this weekend.

Where did I say I don't agree with any of the players discussed?
Are you making an assumption about my needlework skills?

North Adelaide have nothing to worry about.

No mention of Jimmy Ezard, IMHO is clearly infront of Beech and Caire at Westies

No Wedgie, but I was curious to see if you had an opinion on the players he mentioned...

I'm sure your ability to 'knit one, pearl one' is unquestionable ;)

Yeah, I must admit, I was surprised not to see Jimmy in that list, especially considering he had a Magarey Medal winning (joint) season last year and in my opinion, would still be up to it* at AFL level.

What is the "knock" on Jimmy Allan. He has been the bset player in the SANFL for the past three years. When he first got here his kicking was ordinary but it has improved markedly in that time. He is now a very good user of the ball and a good finisher. Sure he hasn't got blistering pace, but he finds the ball so often I am sure he would be an asset to a lot of AFL midfielders.

Grimes plays for Melbourne (I think it is Jack?) in the AFL so obviously as you mentioned Glenelg, you are talking about Todd Grima? In my opinion, he has the athleticism to make it at AFL level but the one big question mark would have to be his disposal.

At 23, I'd say Todd still has 'time on his side' based on Ricciuto's point, but really doubt another club (he was a rookie at Geelong) would have any interest, which would no doubt please Bays fans.

On the other hand, his younger brother Alex, 20, who has previously been on the Hawks rookie list, is having an outstanding season as a fast leading, crumbing forward and in my opinion, if he continues on his good form for the rest of the year, may have some AFL clubs sniffing a bit more intently on him.

I think Cockshell is the best chance of the lot, but of the rest maybe 1 or 2 would have a 20% chance at best.

Chambo is 30 years old and I reckon, as mentioned, is probably 'too mature' now...

There was some talk about Adelaide showing some interest in him a couple of seasons ago and I reckon if Geelong, or any other team for that matter, had had the success with the likes of a James Podsiadly or other matutre age players back then, I reckon Gas would have at least made it onto an AFL list.

He and Jade Sheedy from Sturt have always amazed me as to how they never at least got a chance on an AFL list?

I think the failed Adam Richardson experiment killed off any chance of Chambers getting drafted.
