A strong last quarter display with the wind saw an undisciplined Eagles team over run South by 53 points and get some much needed percentage after being only 2 goals up at 3/4 time.
Grocke was a stand out kicking 5 goals from CHF. I thought he needed to add some more goals to his game to become one of the top line key forwards in the competition and this year he has done that - playing a little closer to goal. Powell was excellent on the ball as usual and Bock dominated from CHB showing he's ready to slot straight back in to the Crows.
Polec slotted 3 classy goals and showed the same composure and skill that he displayed last season. He will be a key player in this years quest. I also like the look of Brodie Smith. He uses the ball well and manages to penetrate to a positive long option with his kicking. Zac Fitzgerald was a late inclusion for Burton, playing in his first game at half forward, he did enough to suggest he has a future at this level - if not higher.
Now a bye for two weeks before the home stretch where we'll need to start settling on a line up.

Gee, Parry is a good acquirement for us. How many hit outs did he win? 50?

Q: Did McKenzie win a free for a high tackle here?
A: No.
That's what the first half was like.

Pity he suffered in being an AFL lab rat for half a season.

Solid effort by the Eagles, in a game we were never going to lose after the first 20 minutes when South hadn't kicked a goal with a three goal wind.
Grocke was excellent, Bock, Powell and Thompson pretty good, with others seeming to come in and out of the game a bit.
Didn't have the best angle to see the Grocke report and from what I saw didn't think there was much in it, so will go with others opinions.
Fitzgerald showed a little bit in his first game, but don't think his inclusion really contributed to our structure, being too tall up forward with Grocke, Welsh, Day, Fitzgerald and sometimes Miles.
Umpiring wasn't soft, but pretty inconsistent favouring South in the first half IMO, and better in the second half most of the time. However, their instructions to call play-on at the slightest movement after a mark or free is not really helping the game or showing much of an understanding of it.

Crowd mentioned on LifeFM as 2181, not huge but reasonable for an Eagles/South game.

Shocking final quarter by South when the game was there to be won at 3/4 time, only 2 goals down. Until then they had been having a real crack.
As mentioned above, South didn't take advantage of a strong wind in the 1st quarter, but did manage to break relatively even in the second Q.
Very entertaining third Q, but it seemed as though everytime we kicked one, the home side would respond within a couple of minutes.
6.7 to 0.2 in the final half hour, with the wind having dropped off. Enough said.
Eagles too good, South's fadeouts continue.

South were 9.7 at 3/4 time. Sorry for being pedantic

Eagles too good. Can be summed up pretty quickly.
What does warrant talk is the umpiring. Perhaps the worst, insipid display of umpiring I have ever seen in my life. For once Williams (who was pretty bad) was overshadowed by one of his brethren. Don't know his name but the overly sensisitve little blonde haired umpire who gave about ten 25 metre penalties throughout the game needs to be axed from this level. When umpires continually refuse to give holding ball, miss-high tackles, and award 'push in the back' decisions when no hands are used then players are going to get frustrated. They might even mutter 'b**shit' when a decision is given. The umpires need to toughen up. There is a difference between something like that and directing a tirade of abuse towards umpires . TOUGHEN UP !!!! It is killing the game.
Is it the umpires themselves that are terrible or are they directed by the umpiring coach to look the other way? If it is the latter, do they think letting umpiring standards disintegrate to the level they are is good for the game?????

Including the one where South was awarded an out on the full; Knights had the ball in his hand and waited for a South player to take the free so he could give it to that player. No-one came to him, so he dropped the ball on the ground (note, on the spot and not threw it away) and subsequently was brought back 25 metres.

It's either Corey Bowen or Mathew Oates...

Before the match, a Rec. Footy demonstration match was played. The umpire was a former West Torrens and Woodville player:

I reckon Robbie Muir would make a good League umpire!

Saw an article in the paper during the week re Robbie Muir, great to see him making some positive changes in his life. The article was about him assisting homeless/disadvantaged people.

I stand by my comments.

Muir would do better than some of the umpires out there, that's no sarcasm in that post.
By the way, I was very pleased with the last half, good finish to the match.

Don't worry mate, I agree with you.
I reckon we would be better encouraging league players just out of the game into umpiring.

Eagles were undisciplined today at times .The AFL listed umpire that was dropped after he made an AFL coach glare last week at him was to blame .Fair enough if he was crap both ways I would accept it, but the other two umpires looked like umpiring gods compared to him!!And just for Graham Cornes (if you are reading this) woman umpire in the under 18's and she did a fantastic job from what I saw today!!
Eagles way to good in the fourth .Eagles just did what had to be done for the first 3 terms then turned it on in the fourth.Margin should have been larger .Eagles missed 4 or 5 easy goals at the start of the fourth term.
Well done Grocke out classed Souths backline today. Even had a player dragged of in the third. But once again he did 1 undisciplined act and was reported !!
Polec added some much needed PACE and Class after not being permitted to play league thanks to the AWFUL!!!
Eagles still need to find that 1 lead up forward for the full forward line IMHO.
And that huge tackle by Grieger in the third anyone else see it !!
Bock a class above !
End of day plenty of improvement left in the Eagles.
South after watching most of the U18's(had to dash home to take my sick son home just before the game ended) seconds and all the league theres not much in cupboard for Ron to work with.
South 18's were faster but no skills
South seconds also lacked skills
Souths league team had the skills but couldn't go four terms (a change from last time).
But end of the day Eagles had a win thats all that matters
