Rules of the Game Question

Today during the North v Port game the umpire gave a North player a free and then he gave 50 metres due to the treatement he copped.
The North player remonstrated and the umpire (and I quote as I have it on tape) : "You've just lost your 50".

Can an umpire give a 50 metre penalty and then take it away while leaving the original player with the free kick???

I'd be very interested on some officials ruling on this one.

The North player would have been lucky not to be reported for remonstrating with the umpire

I assume you're joking by the emoticon but why would the umpire not give the opposition a free if that was the case (which it shouldn't have been).

I don't know myself, but I am thinking that it may be a guideline, not a rule which is in the rule book.

There are things I know of which are instructions given to umpires which should be in the rule book, but aren't. This might be another one of these cases.

I don't really know all the rules, but an umpire would usually reverse the decision and give the ball to the opposition side (which I don't agree with). Reversing a 50m penalty is new to me, I've never seen that happen before. Having said that, I think it is better justice than giving the ball to the opposition.

I think I've seen it once before and this year as well at an Eagles game, I think it was the one against Port at Thebby.

Was the North player remonstrating with the umpire or a Port player? If it was the umpire, why would he remonstrate after receiving a 50?

Got in on tape? Do the umpires have microphones during ABC broadcasts?

Weird though, as said already you'd think that the whole decision may have got reversed and the ball given to Port.

What I find amazing about this whole incident is that Elstone (I think it was him) was over the top of Shubert who is lying on his back and paid a free or mark. Elstone then slams his forearm straight into Schuberts head - the umpire see's it and pays a 50 metre penalty - BUT DOESN'T report him!!! Schubert and another North player get into the umpire about why no report then the umpire who obviously is backed into an embarassing corner gets out of it by cancelling the 50 metre penalty and making Schubert take his free from the original spot???

No wonder the umpires cop shit form all and sundry!

You can't cancel out a 50 m penalty to my knowledge, Law 18.1 which covers 50 m penalty does not make any provisions for canceling/reversing a 50 m penalty. If Drebins version is correct (behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards and umpire (15.5), Port should have been paid a freekick at the mark where the original free kick was awarded.....

Bloody umpires always favour North...... Still remember that atrocious charging free kick that wasn't paid at the BAy in 95 when Jonny Symonds took the mark in the 3rd quarter and Jefferies (i think it was) charged into him in what seemed to be the 4th quarter (so late it was) Timmy Kowal...Play on.....hence may alter ego circled the umpires at 3 quarter time just looking at them........

I can't remember the year but i remember being at the Bay and a very angry "gentleman" had been screaming all day from the granstand at the umpires. 3/4 time came and the "gentleman" charged down the stairs still shouting and charged onto the ground where he proceeded to stand on the edge of the centre square and continue and absolute tirade of abuse at the men in white. Made a bit of a goose of himself. Wasn't you was it 1980TM? I think the incident i was refering to was more likely around 1998 or 99 though so unlikely.

Rod_rooster - I can remember the game you are describing quite vividly. The "Gentleman" you are referring to was on of the Vice Presidents (and could still well be - just don't want to drop him in it). The umpire was our good mate Dicky Williams.

It was in 2003 whilst under the reign of David Noble.

I know I stood there and laughed as he had rant and rave.

Didn't Cornes shame himself one day in recent years at the bay by standing on the square at 3/4 time abusing the umpires?
