Port 2.4 4.9 9.10 13.12 (90)
West 3.2 5.5 7.7 9.9 (63)
Goals
Port: Tim Milera 4, Butcher 3, Mercer 2, Meiklejohn, Maric, Kirkwood, Biacsi.
West: Schmidt, Fielke, Davenport 2, Brad Fisher, Webb, Ferguson.
Well done to the maggies. Very impressive and I think they beat us at our own game. Hard and tough at the footy and their chasing and tackling was first rate.
A case of all played well for the maggies and I would expect Butcher to get an opportunity at the higher level very soon. Best for the bloods was probably Morris, Ezard, Ferguson and Davenport. Falls away a bit from there.
Special mention to Zane Kirkwood who I reckon took one of the best marks I have ever seen midway through the second quarter.

Onya Maggies. Good to see the form of Dolling and Summo. Mileras improved this year and Butcher is providing a consistent target (probably for not much longer).

Only saw the last 1/4 after attending to Junior Boon football duties and one of the few times I've seen the lights on at Alberton for a game. Got cold, dark and miserable right near the end.
Port looked good, run and carry, targets up forward and good to see the Crows play well as Maric in the Magpies side will make a difference to where we finish. We need a big body to support Jimmy and Maric does that for us.
Good last 1/4 of footy. Nice to meet you Thiele, pity you missed it R&B, I could have got you that glass of red.

Congratulations to Port. It was obvious from the start of the match that the magpies were more desperate and were first to the contest. If it wasn't for Port's poor kicking they should have lead at 1/2 time and won by more.
A big reality check for west. We were killed in ruck by Mickeljohn and port won the clearances. Most alarming for me was the poor form and unwillingness to get in front position by Webb at full forward.
South next week still looms as a danger game.

Mate was pretty quick to tell me about Kirkwood's mark, looking forward to seeing it.
Don't think Port are going to drop too many at home this year, glad they shifted our game.

Westies were beaten at their own game by a Port team that played tight, tough footy. Far too many of our players were happy to allow others to do the tough work. The amazing thing was that Westies led for over half the game despite Port dominating the play. Westies started without Fort Caruso and Lobbe, Davenport and Rankine came into the team.
In the 1stQ Westies looked to be the better team early on with a more economical use of the footy but Port had most of the ball especially late in the Q. 1stQ WA 3.2, PA 2.4. There were early signs that Port were getting on top at the centre breaks with Meiklejohn and Maric getting first touch of the ball.
In the 2nd Port had pretty much all of the play with the Bloods scoring their 2 gls against the flow of the game. Port were strangling Westies at the stoppages and were basically tougher at the ball and the body. It wasn’t pretty footy and we were pressured into mistakes, poor decisions and turnovers by a scrappy but effective Port. It was amazing that Westies were still in front by half time, WA 5.5, PA 4.9.
Westies supporters were waiting for Port to crack but the 3rdQ was their best booting 5.1 to 2.2. Tim Milera was everywhere and made life hell for Westies best player Steven Morris. Port dominated the stoppages and therefore the game and Westies jagged 2 gls towards the end. Port did seem to get the better of the umpiring during this term including 2 x 25m penalties that gifted them goals. The concerning thing about these was that it is not possible to understand why they were given, a cross word, a puzzled expression?!
3rdQ WA 7.7, PA 9.10.
The game was still there to be won in the last but to Port’s credit they maintained the pressure and prevented Westies from developing any run or system. We tried 2 ruckmen in the centre, Fergy down fwd but nothing worked. Port kicked 4, we got 2, not good enough. The game finished with the lights on in gloomy and damp conditions.
Final score WA 9.9, PA 13.12.
Best for WA were Morris, Schmidt, Ezard Birss and Fielke. Brad Fisher was starved of opportunties, Fergy battled hard all day. Lobbe needed the run and young Rankine did some good things. Davenport looked dangerous around goals but is too selfish. Macreadie had a shocker as did Webb, Nat Caruso and Kurt Thompson. Our rucks were well beaten. Ezard has a fantastic workrate but today he spent most of his energy tackling players with the ball rather than getting it himself.

We looked slow today - no zip > Fort was out crook and one wonders whether others were off colour.
Our forward structure was terrible - Port had numbers back so we couldn't go in long and we didnt believe we could win a one on one contest today. Well done to the magpies on their hard running and ability to get to our players with such desperation.
Did we win a centre clearance? I cant recall one?
We need Piasentes toughness urgently and Morans rucking ASAP.
Maybe a light week on the track to freshen the squad up because like Port, South are very quick too.

1st of all if Westies moved the ball forward quicker they wouldn't have had Port rebounding so easy out of defence.
What a load of crap Ports got numbers back.
( your saying Port played defensive ) Port played defensive football when they had too, like all sides, they attacked with every opportunity & defended with every opportunity, thats why they won by 5 goals.
They did everything far better than there opposition.
West won more clearances than Port in the 1st qtr. But got smashed after that.

No, Port had 6 players back, while west forwards continually moved up the field across the centre line. Thurgood did drop back as a 7th man in the 1st qtr but that was good coaching from Port as we did control play. We should have matched him up with an extra forward. After 1/4 time, Port started well and had a conventional forward 6 and west also played man on man in ports forward line. Trouble was, port had 6 in our forward line while our forwards for whatever reason, drifted into that midline and when we got hold of the pill, we couldnt go long unless we wanted a 3 on 1 contest. Not Port's problem "no mercy". I thought it was out tactictal error. So by dropping back, I meant your boys didnt allow themselves to be dragged out if you see my point. Think you may have misinterpreted what I meant.

Technically Port was bottom since Sturt hauled themselves over Port when they pipped the Roosters on Saturday.
I think.

Don't get sucked in NM. Too many posters on here don't really understand what happens on the footy field.
