My post to this snippet on the Adelaide Now site Local Footy

Gee i wonder why ?? i know maybe the games are played on a Friday night at Coopers, the games are not televised and also not clashing with the Crows or Power games does help. Its great to see people returning to SANFL REAL FOOTY and giving the oversanitised AFL the flick.

They have got a favorable fixture mix but good luck to them. I would have LOVED to been at the Parade on a Friday night to see Roosters play the Legs but it ain't gunna happen. In fact I would prefer to go to Cooper Stadium with a bucket load of atmosphere than Adelaide Oval with 4000 people there. Having said that there is an element of Bandwagoners, but I bet the rest of the comp wouldn't mind having that problem.

We suspected for some time that there were a lot of people out there who would be members if given a little push. There were many people who obviously had an interest in the club but weren't members, some long term members who had drifted towards the AFL, and some who had lost interest in football but still interested in how Norwood were going.

The club employed a person to seek out these people and encourage them to join up. It has been an outstanding success with membership increasing by over 50% on 2010. There has also been a push to rejuvenate the interest of former players, and the past player membership has increased from 64 to over 400.

To be blunt, it's an example of what clubs can do with a little effort. It reminds me of the time Hawthorn got off their bums and did a full on membership drive, and when they got to 50,000 other clubs started to think, "If they can do it, so can we".

Norwood have elected to play a role in keeping the SANFL alive.

Not scared to say that may be a contributing factor. I do know people who have returned since our form improved.
Kudos must also go to the club who have spruced up the oval and surrounds, i know the new kids area and fun zone is a hit with families.

In all seriousness seems like a good effort to increase members, but the real challenge is to make that sustainable over the next few years and not just be a one or two year blip.

I wish your club had night matched at Elizabeth as well.

Looking forward to the light upgrade next year and having night footy out at the Ponderosa again.

With the info AH posted, it seems due reward for effort by all involved in the Norwood footy club, well done.

With sustained success, still don't understand why CDFC don't have a larger membership numbers and although I know there are a few factors behind the less than impressive home crowd figures for the Dogs, hopefully that improves as the year progresses.

Think Central's problem is away teams fans dont rock up at Elizabeth. Dont know why, i cant remember the last time ive missed a legs game up there. The facilities are good, carparking is easy and the banter between spectators is great. Ive been taking my 13 yo son to elizabeth since he was a baby and ive never once felt intimidated or threatened and i generally sit in the outer. Definately on of my favourite away trips apart from the floggings we cop there, just be nice to win there once in awhile :D

Of course there'll be some bandwagoners in attendance figures...and some of them will belong to the opposition team as well.

Anyone who says their club doesn't have any is either delusional or lying. Every sportsteam has them and the better the club does the more they get...the trick is to keep them coming back.

As far as I'm concerned if they turn up and hand over their money to get into the game, spend some while they're at the game and especially if they fork out for a membership then let them...their cash will benefit the clubs and the SANFL same as anyone elses will.

Regards
JAS

Don't scratch that Bandwagon Norwood fans, don't want that 2008 black and gold colour scheme to be seen.

Seriously though it is great to see the crowds rocking up to support the best football competition in the world.

Certainly a big turn out of Norwood supporters on Monday, felt like I was out-numbered 4 to 1 (on the eastern side of the ground anyway). ;)

I won't begrudge anyone attending SANFL games, bandwagoners or not.

Yep, we've won 1 flag in the past 26 years and keep good crowds in the interim. Definitely front runners I'd say

It really is a pity people don't think before posting.

A mate of mine who is an ex Norwood League Footballer was contacted by the club at the start of the year and I can confirm that he is now very much back as a member and enjoying it immensely!

Great to see, also positive is that many from Glenelg's bandwagon have seemed to "stick" despite the on field performances giving plenty of excuses not to turn up.

The draw has been conducive to good attendances of both our own and opposition supporters, however on the flip side it has only included 2 night games at Coopers Stadium and an AAMI Stadium fixture that could very possibly have brought in a higher official attendance if programmed differently

that is probably all true but the bottom line imho with every team is that if you are winning more often than not '' more supporters'' (who in turn can become members) come along & watch....it happened with glenelg only 5 or 6 years ago, who recalls when port were a 'powerhouse' (no pun intended) in the 1980's & 1990's ? we all heard them say ''we go rain, hail or shine'' or ''we go win, lose or draw'' etc well as lara bingle would say ''where the bloody hell are you'', when sturt were in despair winning numerous wooden spoons in a row they had hardly anybody going & when carmen's hard work started to pay off the blues' supporters came back in droves.....as i said it happens with every team

Fsir call Bayman, I think it also depends on how a club loses when they are down .. If any club/team is a dispirited rabble over a lengthy period of time it really is only the diehards thst will attend past the first say 1/3rd of the season - to that extent I reckon our figures still stack up OK during the Hill era
