Didnt appear to handle the pressure of being favourites today

South were woeful today and once again when their long suffering supporters are given any hope .... They let them down . Usual stock standard thing for south too do .....

West were great today and I believe will make the 5 ....there work rate and defense was top rate.

South looked very unmotivated and slow today.

Can't work out where they are at right now :(

Not a loaded question Southee, but does the expectation of a win really play on the players minds? To me most times they expected to win they dont.

Probably does mate ...big article in the paper today and I thought to myself this morning "we won't win this game today" ....I think there is some mental blockage going on there :(

One team played as though it was a final. One didn't.

From half way through the 2nd term, West were first to the ball, won the majority of the clearances and 50/50 balls. Their talls were too good, and probably should have won by 10+.

Not good enough from South. If 7 days is a long time in footy, 21 days is an eternity.

Not a fan of the three week break and dont think it did our club any favours this week, that said we played a pretty poor brand of footy today and should not have been done like that on our home deck. Some good form showing through from several good players, yet still a number of passengers on our list as well, think the next few weeks will be about who keeps there spot on the league list and who gets cut. Expect yet another turnover of players at the end of the season until the list is competitive.

I was there and I thought Westies played well and appreciated the return to form of some of their injured players.

Ben Fisher was terrific and Scott Bricknell broke lines consistently.

Sraighter kicking for goal should have seen a 10 goal win.

It wasn’t perfect, we made a few blues and there was the occasional lack of discipline and some poor kicking but it was still a good day at Noarlunga today as Westies posted their first win for ten long and frustrating weeks. It was a total team effort with everyone contributing and lots of hard running creating heaps of scoring opportunities.
Silvester and Green dropped out with Anderson and Eagle coming in. Eagle, in his first senior game, started at full back on Wundke, the league’s leading goalkicker giving away 4cms in what seemed a glaring mismatch.
Westies started well but South got back into the game with some dubious frees and lead at Q time, 4.2 to 3.2. At this point Wundke had 3 gls and we were wondering when the move would come.
The 2nd Q was pretty even with Davenport getting his second and Hartlett making his presence felt up forward. Half time WA 6.5 to SA 6.2.
The 3rdQ saw West return to their early season form as they ran South out of the game. It started in the centre with Willets and the mid-fielders driving the ball forward to Brad Fisher and Webb. Numerous scoring chances were created by this free flowing style and we should have been further in front at 3Q time having booted 6.7 with many easy chances missed in front of goal. Fielke was stretchered off with what looked to be a bad ankle injury. Our run was stopped when Piasente was reported for a rough tackle as we streamed forward followed a few minutes later by a lapse in discipline by the ex-captain gifting South a 50m penalty and their only goal of the Q. 3Q time WA 12.12, SA 7.4.
Anderson kicked a fine running goal to start the last Q and it went pretty much goal for goal. Brad Fisher missed probably the easiest goal of the day, 10m out in front but made up for it a few minutes later converting from a fine mark. Webb was taking some good marks but wasted many scoring chances with poor kicking. Meanwhile, down the other end of the ground, debutant Brad Eagle had confounded all the experts on the mound by shutting Wundke out of the game. We kicked 4.5 this Q to South’s 4.1 running out convincing winners 16.17 to 11.5. Co-incidentally we had the same number of scoring shots (33) that we had when we last played South and this remains the most we have had all season.
Brad Fisher kicked 4.3. He marked well all day but missed a few easy shots. Davenport kicked 2 early and did drop out of the game. Beech, Anderson and Hartlett also got 2 apiece.
It was hard to pick best players as it was such an even team effort. Caire was very good all day. Bricknell played some classy footy and his disposal was precise – something that cannot always be said about him. Morris was his usual brilliant best and some of his runs out of the backline were inspirational. Willets worked tirelessly all day and won the rucks against some pretty big opposition. Ferguson did some terrific things, a courageous mark running back, a wonderful smother to blunt a Panthers attack and just the way he uses handball to open up the game. Birss got heaps of the footy and always uses it well. Pettigrew got better as the game went on but looked to be badly out of touch early. Brad Eagle deserves a mention as he noticeably picked up the pace of the game against some quality opposition. Brad Fisher is providing a genuine and much needed forward focus.
The umpiring was pretty atrocious all day with many confusing and many just plain wrong decisions.
The 2s won 12.12 to 10.4.

Unfortunately for South, I now see a real chance that they will miss finals action yet again. Wins to North over Sturt and South (and possibly Central again), coupled with South losses to Norwood and the Eagles would place North above South. Unless West can defeat the Eagles, it looks like fifth spot will come down to the North v South match in two weeks time.
Cheers

Great write up B&R. The one player you did miss out on was Ben Fisher. I reckon he would have to be one of the most underrated players in the comp. BOG for mine today and some of the marks and courage he shows for a bloke his size needs to be seen to be believed.

I told you pre-game redandblack I felt the Bloods were due and would win today ;)

I said Brad Fisher would have a dominant game and he was pretty good (except for that missed set shot for goal from 8m out !!) but it was the other B.Fisher in Ben who was fantastic for Westies wasn't he?

Best on ground for mine.

You sure did, Phil :D

Well, there was no change in the game plan and West ran riot after half-time, finishing with 33 scoring shots, again proving that 'flooding' depends on the trend of the game and form of your players.

West fans were left to rue the many weeks without Ben Fisher and many others. Fisher's courage was inspirational and he led the way, but West's forward line gave South's defence a lot of problems, especially with the overhead marking of Brad Fisher and Adam Hartlett, with Daniel Webb also doing well up forward, although he needs to improve his kicking for goal.

Ryan Willits was dominant in ruck and was very good around the ground and Scott Bricknell has made a great transformation from a rebounding defender to a line-breaking wingman.

Brad Eagle, all of 6'1" tops, made his debut at full-back against the league's leading goalkicker, Michael Wundke. Wundke kicked 3 in the first quarter, two from soft frees and added a couple when the game was all over, but in between Eagle was very good.

South kicked 5 of their 11 goals from frees or 25's, while West couldn't even win a goalsquare free for the most obvious holding-the-ball of the year, but it made little difference to a West side that for the first time for a fair while lined up with a healthy side with few 'outs', apart from Jarrod Silvester, who was an important late withdrawal.

Is this a biased review? Undoubtedly, but it's been a long time between drinks.
