SANFL WELCOMES GOOD FRIDAY FOOTY IN 2012

The SA Football Commission has endorsed Good Friday football for 2012, with South Adelaide set to host the match at Hickinbotham Oval on April 6.

SANFL General Manager – Football and Corporate Operations Darren Chandler said the game, to be played at night, would have a strong family focus and provide a platform to raise funds for charity.

“Good Friday football has proved very successful for State Leagues and community leagues in WA and Victoria over the past couple of years,” he said.

“A number of SANFL clubs have previously voiced their support for Good Friday games and South Adelaide in particular put forward a compelling case which received the backing of the Commission.”

“Our job is to support the clubs in their initiatives to connect with their local communities. At this stage, the Good Friday fixture will be held in 2012 and will certainly be reviewed for coming seasons.

“While we respect the religious views of the South Australian community, we believe this event will provide an opportunity for families to come together to enjoy a night of local footy, which will also be supporting a charitable cause

Great idea. The Bays have been keen to host a game on Good Friday, so not sure they will be too happy missing out. Seems a bit weird to go for Noarlunga as the first test. Would get much bigger crowd at the Bay or Richmond IMO.

How will the licencing situation be effected?
Good Friday footy rocks, I watch South Mildura and Irymple every year. It's a great day and the crowd packs in.

The club has been quiet innovative in a number of aspects surrounding our home ground match day experience but this one iám not so sure. Pleased the SANFL support it and its charity focus but it may upset and isolate more than it attracts, time will tell.

Even those of us with a religious persuasion pretty much can accept this decision. They have kept away from the 3:00pm time zone which is the sacred time for Christians.

Cheers

Is it a "handout" for South to try and get support for them or do they have the best case ? I wonder what that means ? I reckon a combination of Sturt ,Norwood ,Glenelg , Port or Centrals would be a compelling case ?? Sturt V Norwood Friday night ? Glenelg V Port/ Sturt at the Bay ? These would pull 10,000+ IMO.

Will be interesting to see which club puts their hand up to play that night. No doubt South will want a "crowd puller" and if charity fundraising is part of it too, then likewise the SANFL will want to schedule a traditional club to play South that night.

It's the only game on Good Friday so if they are playing it will be against South so I guess you will still be going regardless
