Fox Footy - Headliners this Week - Peter Motley Story

Postby Brad » Mon Aug 21, 2006 12:08 am

This week Fox Footy's very good show, Headliners has the Peter Motley story.

Im very interested in watching this as I was only 6 in 1987 but can still remember the accident but don't know much else about it.

That accident robbed us of a potential AFL superstar.
I remember Peter playing for Sturt, the guy had that
freakish ability to take high flying marks and his ground
skills were exquisite as well.

BRAD if I had to compare him to a modern day player, one
who comes to mind is Brett Burton, both take unbelievable marks,
have wonderful evasive skills and are blessed with great skill levels.
Motley was a better player as he made less mistakes than the birdman.

His accident and the Neil Sasche injury in the 70's are the 2 most
saddest football memories that I have.

Peter if you read this my thoughts are with you mate.

Thanks for the heads up on this one Brad (still have to watch part 2 of Phil Carman from last week).
Don't like to guess how good he might have ended up but you felt he was starting to come into his own when this tragedy occured.

Mal's post is spot on .. As a kid Motley had it all and such was his ability he was one of those types that was a favourite player for many who didn't even follow Sturt or Carlton .. I wasn't old enough to know what happened with Neil Sasche. which was a great tragedy, but was pretty devastated at the time of Motley's accident.

foxFooty Headliners is THE best footy show on TV.

The 3 part story about the failled merger between the dogs and fitzroy has been copied and stored to show to young Borats in a few more years when they understand the world better.

A friend of mine was involved in the making of those episodes, I contacted him after and I admitted to being quite emotional (almost SturtPeter style ) while watching them.

He forwarded on my email to one of the producers of the show, who sent me a reply saying that i wasn't the only one. A VERY high profile bulldog (I CANT SHARE THE NAME) had the same "experience" as me.

Bottom line:

Watch the show everyone.

Agree with Borat re: Headliners. An excellent show. Also agree with mal about Motley being a Burton type player. Twice in one day!! I'll have to consult my doctor!

Motley had the world at his feet & was robbed.
I recall Craig Bradley giving Peter his 1987 Premiership Medallion on the night of the celebrations

Is it what

Headliners will be missed, the one's recently about Carmen and the Crows formation have been great viewing. It's a shame that it can't last.

Interesting to hear Russell Ebert last Saturday morning strongly deny Headliners version of events that 'Port never asked Peter out to the club'

What was Russell's version of events?

Geof Motley's version is that the club told him Peter wasn't good enough to play league footy.

At the time, there was still a lot of bitterness between Mots Snr and the PAFC.

To think of the difference one P. Motley might have made on one particular day in 1984!

Russell's version was that he tried to get Peter out to the club when he was 15 or 16 years old but because Peter was living and going to school in the Sturt zone and he was in the Sturt's development squads, that he wanted to stay where he was.
Russell did touch on the fact that Geoff had fallen out with Port a few years before over what amounted to selection issues in his role on the selection committee at Port.

Barely remember Peter being a fairly hot favourite for the 1985 Magarey Medal but was beaten by Grantley Fielke.

Mots Snr was sacked as chairman of selectors.
