Magarey Medal "Leak"

I just spoke with a major betting agency about the status of their Magarey Medal betting, now the minor round has concluded.
They advised me that they, and other betting agencies, have ceased taking MM bets on account of an apparent "leak" of the winner.
If so, then surely someone at the SANFL needs to be asked why betting agencies have taken this course of action at least twice in recent years? It never happens with the Brownlow IIRC - what is different about the Magarey and the integrity of the SANFL's processes?
Unbelievable.

These leaks can work well for the betting agencies also, presume the "leak" isnt genuine.
I think a few agencies have been stung heavily with Jimmy's wins.

Look on a serious note, why can't the votes be sealed in envelopes in the umpires room immediately after games and then secured in a vault. Not hard. Then under proper supervision let them be ttaken to the count function and sorted from round one to round 23 or whatever the last round is - again under supervision - then undone in front of the audience and tv viewers and counted out. The only reason they are opened and precounted is so various official drop kicks can preprogram some stats and film clips etc etc of the vote catchers which is all sooooo predictably false and plastic. It should be done in a fair dinkum way not a Claytons Brownlow extravaganza. The there'd be no leakage.

Certainly for the league it should be done that way.
U/18's and reserves counted and announced beforehand.

Unless the Umps have loose lips .. Not that that would ever happen

Was wondering about that. There's no proof of a leak. It's an easy out for an agency worried about a big loss.

Can not see how it could happen. Who would open the votes apart from the SANFL management and then again why would they, for what reason ?

How many club or community league medals leak?
I've not heard of too many, if any over the years.
The people doing the votes take their role very seriously.
Which prompts the question, has there really been a leak?
All this talk of leaks....

P!ss funny.
Actually, in recent years, the Whyalla News printed an article about the winner on the Monday paper, with the count held later that night. Gold!

But there is very little betting on other medals, hence much less reason to leak information.

Very true. But that makes it even more important to take your job seriously, doesn't it? I guess in an ideal world, anyway.

True, but it also provides a reason for bribing. Not saying anyone was bribed, but if there was a genuine leak, some sort of financial reward would be on offer.

The umpires sometimes have some idea. When Josh Francou won in 1996 the word was that he had polled exceptionally well even though he wasn't a favourite with the bookies.
The umpires used to have a tipping competition at the Magarey medal count. One year one of the senior umpires suggested that a former Woodville captain would poll well, he had given him 4 best on grounds. Another senior umpire said he must be a real chance "I've given him 4 best on grounds as well". They were exactly right. He got 12 votes, they had forgotten that they umpired together in the 4 matches that the Woodville skipper was best on the ground!
