Who's Underachieved/Overachieved in 2006?

Postby Wedgie » Wed Aug 30, 2006 7:06 pm

I thought this was an interesting question that obviously would have many varied answers for different people.
Just remember this might obviously change in the major round.
Luckily for me I can see my pre-season expectations in the SANFL media guide so here goes:

Central - I originally picked them to be top but looks like they're going to come 3rd, others in the media guide picked them to be between 1st and 3rd a slight underachievement (so far), rating B-
Glenelg - I originally picked them to be 9th, most picked them to be 6th to 9th, a definate good performance from Glenelg, dux of the class, A+
North - I picked them to be 2nd, they are comfortably second, others picked them to be between 1st and 4th, about where most expected them to be with perhaps a slight improvement. B
Norwood - I picked them to be 5th, others chose between 4th and 7th, probably a slight underachievement this year, showed what they could do when switched on against North at Prospect, showed against West and Glenelg what they could do when switched off, C
Port - I picked them to be 3rd, most picked them to be between 2nd and 5th, even though still in the running for 3rd they have lost some games not expected to lose (ie West) and have slightly underachieved, rating C+
South - I picked them to be 8th, everyone else picked them to be between 6th and 9th, definately have performed better than most expected they would B+
Sturt - I picked them to be 6th, others picked them to be between 3rd and 7th, worst team in the comp, have had an absolute shocker. You fail. F
West - I picked them to be 7th, most picked them to be 9th so have ended up where most picked them but I think they've been disappointing this year as I expected an improvement from last year. C-
Eagles - I picked them to come 3rd, most picked betweend 2nd and 5th. Have easily been the best team in the comp in the latter half of the season. Rating A

Just my opinions but if you look at my ratings on if teams achieved compared to how we expected them to go I rate them as such in the underachievement/overachievement stakes:

1) Glenelg
2) Eagles
3) South
4) North
5) Central
6) Port
7) Norwood
8) West
9) Sturt

A reassessment will be done mid October as between now and then the Dogs usually improve a couple of grades and North and the Eagles usually drop a couple of grades.

Good write up Wedgie.

agree with that ladder pretty much 100%, i think considering the players Centrals lost, 3rd is probably a decent result, really this year should be some sort of a re-building year, so 3rd is good result if we can hold on to it.

I think Norwood have definitely underachieved this year. They have a good team on paper but haven't been consistent. Our backline has been sensational this year and without them, results could have been worse. As you say Wedgie, wins against Central, North and Glenelg are good but 3 losses against the Eagles (at least 2 from winning positions) plus losses to west and south have meant the season has been a rollercoaster ride. The comp started off very evenly and is still pretty even in win/loss results but still prone to producing some unique results each round!

Ditto.
South runner up over-achiever.

Wedgie,

The Magarey Medal and Ken Farmer predictions in the Media Guide (which I also put tips in for) are also interesting reading...I think my tip of Chris Ladhams and Scott Borlace to share the Magarey may be a touch adrift, but Ben Warren to win the Ken Farmer was only out by one player so far

Here is the link to pre-season predictions: http://safootycentral.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=748

There is less of a gap between the top 4 and the rest than I expected. I also tipped Glenelg for the wooden spoon so they've overachieved. North have done a little better than I expected, Central a little worse, Norwood have been disappointing (despite beating a few good sides) and Sturt and West have been two of the worst teams in the history of the SANFL.

Early in the season I thought we over achieved. No way did I think we'd be 5-0. Where we are on the ladder now is where I expected us to be. I thought we'd struggle to cover the loss of Tony Brown. Thought Bullen and Alvey would cover him to some extent, but Alvey left and Bullen had to go home, so I think we are where we should be. I also counted on us having Paul Evans and Eichner.

For me, the over achievers are Norwood. I didn't expect them to stay in the finals race as long as they did.

The under achievers are South by a long way. I thought Cupido and Warren would be too stronger a forward line for teams to counter on a regular basis. I picked Cupido for the Ken Farmer.

south C+ over
sturt F UNDER
west F under
eags A+ over but always knew they had the team to acheive, but will they achieve the ultimate, better chance than any this year.

South and Glenelg both obvious overachievers. Fancy both of them still being in the hunt at this time of year! Which one wins the prize depends on what happens in Round 23...

Norwood the obvious underachiever for mine. I thought they'd replace Sturt in the five this year.

Here's what people thought after the trial games. Shows in some cases (West and Glenelg) how little they really tell us about the season.

I think it is often hard to pick who will win the spoon more so than the premiership sometimes, I had West this year for the spoon and copped a fair bit for it but its a good reminder how promising the season looks for all nine clubs in February. So much can go wrong.

My two-bobs worth:

Glenelg the main overachievers, or is it just compared to their efforts of previous seasons?
Norwood and South big underachievers
Centrals have over-achieved, with Port having underachieved.
Sturt underachieved in the manner of their losses, not necessarily their ladder position.
West not a good year, but who expected too much of them? Good to see improvement last few weeks.
North maybe slighlty under, again with the manner of their losses against the better sides, for the team that was going to be the favourites.
Eagles maybe slighlty overachieved - some unheralded players have stood up eg Cooper, Grocke, Jacobs.

I'll qualify my North comments by saying they haven't had the feel of dominance or fear over the competition that such clear-cut favourites normally do, ie like Centrals have the last few seasons. I know there is still a lot of footy to go this year though, and by no account am I writing them off.

If Wedgie's assessment of the trial games reflects the general mood at the time, Norwood has neither under- nor over-achieved:

Norwood
2 wins 1 loss (wont count the Cows game).
Probably proved what a lot of us think, will be up there with the best at their best but at their worst will be near the bottom.
Will be inconsistent but could take that 5th spot depending on consistency.

Couldn't sum up the season better, with the exception that you could now say "at their worst will be at the bottom". Beat 2 of the 3 major flag contenders back-to-back, but just a few weeks later was 8 goals worse than the bottom side, at home. Was inconsistent, and could have taken 5th spot with greater consistency. Bang on.

Poorly coached and when the obvious was obvious after about round 3 or 4 failed to introduce the youth.
