Eagles recruiting and training news

Postby cd » Wed Nov 23, 2005 2:09 pm

At the board meeting last night we had a discusion about recruiting and the signings etc.

Confirmed we have lost 4 players - Watts, Peel, Ellis and O'Hara
Confirmed we have gained 4 players - Cooper, Grocke, Jarrod, & Thompson (returning)
Confirmed joining our coaching panel, Luke Norman, Rick MacGowan, Donald Dickie

The rumour re Brad Dabrowski is very interesting - He was not part of any discussion last night and NOT presented to the board as a signing!

To the rumourmongers I can confirm that all those you've been saying were leaving were at training on Monday night at our summer home of Thebarton oval - and all looking good after the break.

Our email service to members has been out of action over the past week or so - apologies to members - will be back very soon

If you can keep Cooper on the straight and narrow you have got yourselves one great pick up. One of the top 5 players in the SANFL in my opinion.
Would be a shame if Dawe has chucked it in as I feel he would have had far greater opportunities next season.
Thanks Wedgie for sorting out the problem for me and Coorong for the nice message.

Good on them. This helps to keep the playing squad relatively stable.

CD - I noticed David Westbrook's name was an omission from the list of players who had re-signed, are their problems here or did you accidently or on purpose miss this player.

spell_check - It's no good sticking to the same old players and having a STABLE squad if it can't bring home the horse flesh/beef/bacon whatever.

True, but at the same time, there really isn't a need to drop the above listed players and rebuild - that's not a word used at the Eagles.

Besides, look where recruiting got South.

Spell_check - I partly agree, selective recruiting is the answer. At this stage the Eagles probably need a backup ruckman and a good tall forward and an injury free run. Last year for every match we averaged 5 to 6 of our best 21 missing. Ongoing improvement from Dale Symmons, Daniel Roberts, James Angas and Nick Salter will add to the overall expected improvement. Also, must play Gavin Colville and Luke Jarrad on the wings.

Jimmy - you know zero.
Missing 2/4 - Cicolella, Darzanos, S. Hall, Frewen, Williams, Freeborn, Potter.
Missing 9/4 - Cicolella, Darzanos, S. Hall, Frewen, Williams, Freeborn, Potter.
Missing 16/4 - Darzanos, S. Hall, Frewen, Williams, Freeborn, Potter.
Missing 25/4 - Stokes, Darzanos, S. Hall, Frewen, Williams, Freeborn, Potter.
Missing 1/5 - Stokes, Watts, Darzanos, S. Hall, Frewen, Williams, Freeborn, Potter.
Missing 7/5 - Stokes, P. Lindsay, S. Hall, Frewen, Williams, Freeborn, Potter.
Missing 14/5 - Ellis, Westbrook, Colville, Freeborn, S. Hall, Frewen, Williams, Potter.
Missing 27/5 - Inkster, Ellis, Westbook, Colville, R. Fiacchi, Frewen, Williams, Potter.
Missing 4/6 - Ellis, Colville, Darzanos, Freeborn, Williams, Frewen, Potter.
Missing 18/6 - Ellis, Colville, Darzanos, Freeborn, Williams, Frewen, Potter.

Ferret I would be inclined to agree with some of what you said but some of the players you mentioned as being in our best 21 leave me a bit surprised. Darzanos certainly is someone who is good to have at your club for depth but he certainly isn't in our best 21. Similarly Potter, Williams and Westbrook are solid players but wouldn't determine whether we won or lost the match. Frewan, Hall, Stokes and Passador were the players I feel we most missed.

But overall, yes, we did have our fair share of injuries, similar to South Adelaide in 2004 and you wouldn't expect us to suffer a similar fate this year.

Anyone have anymore news on Dabrowski? I think he'd more than match O'Hara's loss. It is likely that westies supporters would know more than us at this point in time. I really can't believe west would let him go.

Thompson returning to our club will be a great acquistion. We've missed pace on the wing in recent years and he will certainly add to it. Now more than any other year we need to recruit a pacy rover now that Stokes has gone. There is nothing in the reserves to immediately step up so I feel we need to fill this hole

Angas, Roberts and Salter will step up this year as already mentioned and I believe Angas especially will make an impact.

Anyone have anymore news on Ellis?? I hear South Adelaide is keen on him but he'll more likely end up at Port.

Last I heard Ellis was returning to Canberra - the best place for him. If not, Port are welcome to have another pea heart in their squad. He averages one good game a year.
