There is an alternative

Port Magpies become the Powers reserve side BUT they play in the reserves SANFL comp and relinquish their league sport (8 Team league comp)
The Crows have their reserves sides in the SANFL reserves - 10 team reserves comp.

No byes in either league or reserves and port have no u18's side so there is an 8 team comp there as well. Then the power and crows can do what they like in the reserves SANFL especially if they are only about development and not winning.

We could have a 21 round league comp and realign all club zones taking ports zone and allocating it. It would make take some saturation out of the western suburbs.

Top up players for port and crows must be aged 23 and over not currently listed on an SANFL squad. (WE DO NOT GIVEN THEM the U18's who were not drafted as they are eluding to).

It would mean that when you go to watch your SANFL side, the seconds game may involve a club other than the one your league side is playing BUT this happened in the past before the SANFL merged with the B-Grade under one body many many years ago.

Nice idea but probably a logistic hassle for clubs as they would need to double on staff and volunteers that support both league and reserves on the day due to the required draw changes.

Just a swap of support staff from Ressies to U18 because U18 would play same teams as League.

That along with Mark's original idea is the best solution I've heard yet, please. please SANFL, if they must become part of our comp, take this on board, it would cause far less damage to the oldest league in the land than letting them play against our league sides

V. good idea re U18's playing before the league - more family and friends watch U18's than ressies so may increase crowd numbers too!

I agree, this is not a bad alternative, and I like the getting it down to 8 teams and making more room for WWTFC and Westies.

The option discussed in this thread is the preferred option from the 8 SANFL Clubs (Port not included for obvious reasons) IF, and I say if there is no AFL Resssies Comp which due to costs looks unlikely for a few years.

The problem with this model is the Crows and Power don't want their players competing against our SANFL reserves teams simply because of the gulf between talent, size, strength etc with their non selected list players and the SANFL Ressies lists. Also the other real issues is where do the AFL clubs get top up players from when they have to field ressies temas when they have big injury lists to their current roster?

However the AFL Clubs cant have it both ways. The current model was working fine except for the "come finals time availability" issues that all clubs have suffered from and now the situation re Port and "1 Club" exploiting the rules and being morally corrupt about it!

Interesting times ahead.

Jeez how easy would it be to get some players to play in a side that could potentially sign them to an AFL contract.
Hey Jimmie we are interested in you but would like to see you close hand in our reserves side. Maybe we will sign you next year if you do well.
The only problem I see is a guy like Matt Thomas. Tough, hardened body, experienced. How much damage could he do to a young Ressies player ? It is not the young players developing it is the older players trying to find form .... too easy for them against kids.

This solution is still not preferable to having NO AFL teams in the comp at all ... but it is a workable compromise. Since the AFL clubs are the ones who stand to benefit from this, it is reasonable to expect that all costs to the SANFL be borne by the AFL clubs. No pay = no play.

I suggest we all get behind Mark Beswick for SANFL President, because this idea not only has great merit but has all the hall marks of a great thinker of our game, something sadly lacking in the current bogus SANFL hierarchy.

If the AFL clubs are serious about using its pool of reserve players and are willing to search the SAAFL for promising 23 + players to support their team numbers then they will approve the idea and everyone is happy.

My guess is that The AFL sides want something else (The SANFL League comp) and will say No and walk to the VFL, with good riddance.

that would be the better option again, I'll take them playing in our ressies but would prefer they just ****ed of altogether!
