That is truely sad news, remember Merv patrolling the boundary line back in the 70's. Little man with a big Bulldog heart. A true SANFL legend.

RIP Merv.

What about an absolute club legend in the true sense of the word.

My highlight of being a club official was getting to meet and spend some time with Merv.

My strongest memory as a kid going to the football was seeing Merv in the only royal blue, with red and white arrows, parachute material jacket on clapping the players at the end of a win as they walked down the race.

RIP Merv.

Hi Folks,

I spoke with Kris Grant tonight, in regards to Merv, so I could put something in this week's FOOT-e TIMES SA edition, acknowledging the fantastic person Merv was and his contribution to the Football Club.

My article, as follows:

For FOOT-e TIMES SA, I wrote:
VALE MERV STARKEY

The Central District Football Club is again mourning the passing of another great club person.

Long serving club official and passionate Bulldogs supporter Merv Starkey sadly passed on Sunday, April 21st, at the age of just 63.

Beginning his association with the club in 1969, Merv’s involvement as an official spanned an amazing 40 years, finishing up as the Reserves and League Equipment Steward in 2009.

Merv’s love for the club still ensured he attended Central games, positioning himself alongside the Bulldog’s interchange bench, despite being confined to a wheelchair in more recent years.

Bulldog’s CEO Kris Grant spoke fondly of Merv.

“The Football Club was his life, it was his passion and main interest.”

“He (Starkey) may have been small in stature, but was a larger than life character. Merv lacked a bit of confidence in the outside world but felt right at home within the footy club.” said Grant.

Merv was awarded Life Membership of the Central District Football Club back in 1991 and was a dedicated, long standing sponsor as well. He also donated trophies for Underage awards.

“The Footy Club is poorer for Merv’s passing” reflected Grant.

Another great Bulldog man gone, but not forgotten.

Our condolences are passed on to all of Merv’s family and close friends.

MERV STARKEY:

1969 - 1972 - Assistant Colour Steward
1972 - Reserves Equipment Steward
1973 - Assistant Equipment Steward
1974 - Reserves Equipment Steward
1975 - League Equipment Steward
1976 - 1993 - Assistant Controller of Equipment
1994 - 2009 - League & Reserves Equipment Steward

So sad to lose another great club person from the Dogs, after the recent passing of Norm Russell...

RIP Merv...

Cheers,

BP
